Ex-Wolverine working to grow football roots in Israel

Like many walk-ons, Alex Swieca’s path to the Michigan football roster was circuitous but perhaps not as unique as the football future he is pursuing. Swieca, a quarterback who did not play organized football in high school while growing up in New York, although he captained his wrestling team and played flag football, is hoping to deepen interest in American football overseas by playing on the Israel National football team. It is an 11-on-11 tackle team that uses NCAA rules and is part of the 71-country International Federation of American Football. The team, organized 10 years ago, has strong backing from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who paid for the not-so-glitzy Kraft Stadium located by the central bus station in Jerusalem.
