Donald Trump is a counterfeit Republican

Conservatives who flinch from forthrightly marginalizing Trump mistakenly fear alienating a substantial Republican cohort. But the assumption that today’s Trumpites are Republicans is unsubstantiated and implausible. Many are no doubt lightly attached to the political process, preferring entertainment to affiliation. They relish their candidate’s vituperation and share his aversion to facts. From what GOP faction might Trumpites come? The establishment? Social conservatives? Unlikely. They certainly are not tea partyers, those earnest, issue-oriented, book-club organizing activists who are passionate about policy. Trump’s aversion to reality was displayed during the Cleveland debate when Chris Wallace asked him for “evidence” to support his claim that Mexico’s government is sending rapists and drug dealers to the United States. 1. To begin with, I do not like Trump, but pundits like George Will do not understand his appeal, and his staying power. We have tried being right with civil discourse and proving our side of the political discourse, we failed miserably with McCain and Romney. What many of us in the hinterlands are saying is we need an SOB who will not shrink from the fight, who will attack and attack in a more strident manner when attacked. Trump is not a nice guy, his ressonance is based on our perception of his toughness. What George Will and the rest of the pundits do not understand is that the next Fox debate needs Trump more than Trump needs the debate. If Fox does not drop Kelly, and Trump decides to skip one out of twelve debates, he will have even more political traction than he has now, he will be perceived as a ruthless negotiator, who can and will walk away from a bad deal. Cruz and Fiorina are also rising because of their take no prisoners attitude. Trump epitomizes this attitude best. Obama won two terms without any substance, so to assume that the infatuation with Trump is some how doomed by his apparent lack of substance is not borne out by anything other than the wish by Washington pundits for some semblance of the type of political discourse they got from McCain and Romney. We want a winner, nice does not cut it. S
