In Chicago, Iran nuclear proposal brings discord among Jews

When the Iran deal shouting stops, will healing begin? Jews wonder.

Troubled by the angry voices and harsh words unleashed by the Iran nuclear deal, leaders of Chicago’s Jewish community are anxiously pondering the day after Congress votes it up or down…”In my 30 years in the pulpit, I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Rabbi Michael Siegel of Anshe Emet Synagogue on the North Side. “I’ve heard of people living under the same roof not talking to each other.”…Evan Moffic is the rabbi of Congregation Solel in Highland Park, which is noted for its progressive stands on social issues. Yet his name was not on a letter of support for the deal that 350 rabbis signed — many of them also members of the Reform movement. “Those are my friends,” Moffic said, “But I just don’t think the accord does enough to stop Iran from getting the bomb.” By his estimate, Congregation Solel is split 50/50 on the issue. By comparison, Siegel thinks his Conservative congregation mostly opposes the Iran deal, as he does. The Orthodox community is strongly opposed to the deal.  READ MORE
