Harry Reid: Chuck Schumer and Dick Durbin need to ‘relax’

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid waded into a simmering dispute between deputies Dick Durbin and Chuck Schumer on Wednesday, telling the two to “relax” as they tussle over whether Durbin will keep his job as whip. There was some indication that the two senior Democrats might be heeding Reid’s advice: Schumer (D-N.Y) and Durbin (D-Ill.) spoke by telephone on Wednesday about their very public disagreement over Durbin’s future as party whip, the No. 2 slot in leadership. Reid (D-Nev.), who said this week he would not run for reelection in 2016, has endorsed Durbin to stay on as the whip. But Durbin says that Schumer agreed to back the Illinois Democrat for whip after Durbin’s endorsement of Schumer as leader.
