Rolling Stone to remove controversial UVA ‘Rape on Campus’ story

According to CNN’s Brian Stelter, Rolling Stone and journalist Sabrina Erdely will formerly apologize for and remove last fall’s discredited story about a rape on the University of Virginia campus, the result of a months-long investigation by Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Per Stelter, Columbia’s report found a “systemic failure” at the magazine, ordinarily known for its rigorous fact checking. Erderly’s statement tonight will be her first in months; she has not spoken to the press or tweeted since her story was called into question. The 9,000-word article alleging an horrific gang rape at a U-Va fraternity crumbled under weeks of scrutiny. Re-reporting by the Washington Post and others undercut the article’s central claim, and an investigation by Charlottesville, Virginia PD found no evidence to support the rape story. READ MORE
