From Doubles Tennis to Internet Porn: My Year as a Supreme Court Clerk

Ted Cruz, while controversial, is considered by many to possess a brilliant legal mind. A graduate of Princeton University cum laude, Cruz also graduated Harvard Law School magna cum laude, was editor of Harvard Law Review. Referring to Cruz — the student — Professor Alan Dershowitz said, “Cruz was off-the-charts brilliant.”  Cruz was the first Hispanic to clerk for a Chief Justice of the United States. Cruz has authored more than 80 U.S. Supreme Court briefs and argued 43 oral arguments, including nine before the U.S. Supreme Court.

I was standing behind the chief justice [Bill Rehnquist] of the United States and sitting right next to him was the court’s first female justice, Sandra Day O’Connor. We were in front of a large computer screen gazing at explicit, hard-core pornography. As we examined the screen before us, I remember very distinctly what the 65-year-old O’Connor said. Before I finish that story, maybe I should start from the top….With his [Bill Rehnquist’s] first question, I knew that my recommendation strategy had paid off. “You know, I’ve got two recommendations here from Charles Fried and Alan Dershowitz,” he said, in his deep, gentle voice.
