Obama, Durbin hit the magic number on Iran nuke deal

With an assist from home-state Sen. Dick Durbin, President Barack Obama today reeled in a huge foreign policy victory, securing enough votes in the Senate to ensure that his Iran nuclear agreement will go into effect. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., became the 34th Senate Democrat to say she would support the highly controversial treaty. That means that even if the Senate approves a motion of disapproval, Obama will be able to veto it and have his veto sustained, allowing the agreement to take effect. Durbin has been in charge of lining up votes for the agreement, with other senior Democrats staying out of the fray or opposed to passage.
