NYPD to guard Metropolitan during ‘Klinghoffer’ debut

Cops will guard the opening of a controversial opera about terrorists following months of protests and even death threats. There will be a “heavy police presence” for “The Death of Klinghoffer” at The Metropolitan Opera Monday [October 20], when critics [www.StopDeathofKlinghoffer.com] plan to storm the controversial show, police sources told The Post.

Both uniformed and plainclothes officers will patrol the event, along with cops stationed inside the opera house to prevent protesters from disrupting the performance, a police source told The Post. The threat of protests has sparked fears that the scene could explode into chaos or violence, Met director Peter Gelb said.

…….The opera, by John Adams, centers on the real-life murder of Lower East Side-born Leon Klinghoffer — a wheelchair-bound appliance manufacturer brutally murdered by Palestinian terrorists and thrown off the Achille Lauro cruise ship in 1985……The opera features anti-Semitic language and at times tells the story from the terrorists’ point of view — outraging protesters, who have threatened to burn down the set. One aria in the show declares, “You are always complaining of your suffering, but wherever poor men are gathered they can find Jews getting fat.”…..
