Jewish community condemns ‘intolerance,’ demands UC Santa Cruz response

More than 130 UC Santa Cruz students, faculty, alumni, parents and donors — as well as numerous Jewish leaders — are demanding Chancellor George Blumenthal implement the UC Regents’ Statement of Principles Against Intolerance in response to recent and ongoing incidents they say actively suppress Jewish and pro-Israel students’ freedom of expression and assembly. The letter, dated May 18, is a project of AMCHA Initiative, a nonprofit “dedicated to investigating, documenting, educating about and combating anti-Semitism at institutions of higher education in America”… The letter primarily addresses a May 2 incident in which a celebration of Israeli Independence Day produced by Santa Cruz Hillel was disrupted by student protesters led by the African/Black Student Alliance.
