Iranian officials boast about nuclear program, declining Western leverage

A series of boasts by Iranian officials in recent weeks is deepening concerns that Western negotiators now lack the necessary leverage to extract meaningful concessions from Tehran. The comments, which range from boasts about Iranian military power to its relations with the Western countries it is currently engaged in negotiations with, comes days before diplomats from Tehran are set to meet with the P5+1 global powers over the country’s nuclear program. Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps General Ramezan Sharif over the weekend boasted that Western powers had foreclosed the possibility of military intervention against the Islamic Republic. Sharif blasted Western media outlets – he specifically cited the BBC – as, per the Jerusalem Post, “being complicit in an insidious propaganda campaign to undermine the confidence of Iran’s citizens and spread disinformation about its interests.” READ MORE
