Rachel Timoner, the clergy at Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope, Brooklyn, where Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spends Yom Kippur and where his daughter got married, on Saturday told Politico that “In this speech, he said what most of us think.” She was referring to the Senate Majority Leader’s call on Israel to go to new elections ASAP so that they and the Biden administration can finally rid themselves of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu…“I think that he said out loud what the overwhelming majority of American Jews are saying to each other, which is that Bibi Netanyahu is making the world less safe for Jews and making Israel less safe for Israelis.” And how does the elected Israeli prime minister (leading a 76 to 54 majority coalition government) make the world and Israel less safe for Jews? Timoner explains: “Netanyahu himself has said that he completely opposes a two-state solution. And so, he is an obstacle to peace.”READ MORE
CITY JOURNAL With Guardians Like These: Chuck Schumer’s recent comments about Israel exhibit arrogance and ignorance. Instead of coercing Israel, Schumer should pressure the international community to withdraw support from the aged and corrupt Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas—now in the 18th year of his four-year term and disliked by 90 percent of Palestinians. Moving on from Hamas and Abbas is the only way moderate Palestinians might come forward as partners for peace. Israelis will reckon with Netanyahu and his failure to protect their country at a time of their choosing. Meantime, the self-styled shomer should bite his tongue.
Robert Henoch, a former federal prosecutor, former Manhattan Assistant District Attorney, former US Army officer, and New York voter has written a strong letter to Senator Schumer, a passage of which is below. Send a copy of this letter to Senator Schumer
Dear Senator Schumer,
Yesterday there were media reports that you have called for elections in Israel and the removal of the Prime Minister in Israel. It is not appropriate for the Senate Majority Leader of the United States Senate to call for the overthrow of a leader of a democratically elected country. Have you ever called for new elections in France, or Britain, or Italy, or any other democratic country? Has any other US Senate Majority Leader ever done so? Israel is a sovereign democracy.
Do you think that calling for the overthrow of the democratically elected leader of Israel will help you and your political party with radically anti-Israel and anti- American Jew hating voters located in certain districts in Michigan, Minnesota and other potential swing states? Should the desire for power and reelection govern all of your actions? Should it be your sole or even your primary motivation in deciding on US policy?
You and the President and the President’s staff and his supporters continue to make false accusations against Israel, the IDF and Netanyahu based on Hamas’ obviously false casualty numbers. Why do you wish to feed the narrative that Israel is at fault for the Palestinian invasion of October 7 in which Palestinians murdered, gang raped, beheaded, set on fire, and kidnapped Jews, US citizens, and citizens of at least another half dozen countries?
