…The next day, when we got to U-netaneh Tokef (“Who shall live, who shall die …”) the person leading was singing, and people were singing along, when again, suddenly—silence. Nothing. Again, just tears. No words, no melody. And then, finally, the words at which they’d stopped. “Who by sword…” Indeed, who by sword? It was the question on everyone’s mind, looking back on a year that was unbearable, and a year just beginning that may well not be any better.
