5 rules from a veteran of ‘various security services,’ or how a well-trained team can make the difference between life and death in an emergency

Synagogue security: Not a do-it-yourself job!
by Yael Shahar
December 30, 2019

…A handgun is no match for a rifle in terms of stopping power or accuracy. Professional security people train long and hard just to avoid friendly fire instances in a firefight. It is doubtful that most armed congregants will have that kind of training. I can think of nothing worse than a number of people armed with handguns all opening fire in a crowded space. Given that reality, it is preferable to have one or two people with appropriate weapons whose job it is to stand guard during services, and to monitor entrances. READ MORE

DAILY WIRE An Armed And Trained Jew Is The Best Kind Of Jew American Jews — who also disproportionately live in geographically tight-knit urban or suburban areas — tend to be among the least-armed members of the American polity. A 2005 American Jewish Committee study revealed that just 13% of Jewish homes reported owning a gun — less than one-third of the percentage of non-Jewish homeowners.

NYT ‘editors’ note’ and rewriting the Bret Stephens column post-publication are examples of the Times spinelessly surrendering to the perpetually-enraged faction of its readers

ALGEMEINER New York Times Editors Falsely Blame Bret Stephens for ‘Mistake’ in Column on Jewish Genius
by Ira Stoll
December 30, 2019

The New York Times has published an “Editors’ Note,” inaccurately accusing the newspaper’s own star columnist, Bret Stephens, of committing a “mistake” by “uncritically” citing a study that Stephens actually did criticize. The Times editors write that the Stephens column had the effect of leaving “many readers” with the “impression” that he was arguing that Jews are genetically superior. Yet the real “mistake” here was not by Stephens but by those readers. READ MORE

JEWISH JOURNAL Bret Stephens Under Fire for NY Times Column on Jewish Intelligence  New York Times columnist Bret Stephens came under fire on social media for an op-ed in which he wrote that Ashkenazi Jews are more intelligent than other people and cited a paper by a researcher who promoted eugenics. The reference to the paper later was removed. “The Secret of Jewish Genius” published on Saturday had received nearly 700 comments on the online edition of The Times by Sunday afternoon when the comments were closed.

The elephant in the room: “The muted response to the string of attacks in NYC shows that mainstream U.S. Jewry is indifferent to Haredim and hesitant to condemn those who target them”

Most U.S. Jews Don’t Care About anti-Semitic Violence Against the ultra-Orthodox
by Jonathan S. Tobin
December 30, 2019

…Ever since U.S. President Donald Trump conflated opposition to the removal of Confederate statues with support for an August 2017 neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Virginia, his critics have alleged that he encouraged extremists and that his coarsening of the tone of American discourse has created an atmosphere in which hatred has thrived. Yet in the overwhelming majority of the reported incidents of violence against the ultra-Orthodox in the New York area, including both the Jersey City and Monsey attacks, the assailants have been African-Americans who are unlikely to be influenced by Trump or white supremacists. THE ATLANTIC  Jews Under Attack Deserve Better Than Selective Outrage There was a time—and it was not that long ago—when regardless of what separated Jews, we made a certain common cause over those who traded in the themes that had caused so many Jewish deaths. You could be religious or secular, liberal or conservative, but protecting Jews in the Soviet Union was a fight we all fought. Jews didn’t look the other way when Louis Farrakhan or David Duke spouted hatred. And an attack on a synagogue was, well, an attack on a synagogue. Times have changed.

Lawsuit against Arab Bank Plc alleges their involvement “funding terrorist attacks carried out in Israel by Hamas, Fatah, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and other Palestinian terrorist groups from 1995-2005”

Israeli victims of terror file massive lawsuit against Arab Bank
by Akiva Bigman
December 31, 2019

Over 1,132 Israeli victims of terrorism and families of Israelis murdered in terrorist attacks have filed a 20 billion shekel ($5.8 billion) lawsuit against the Arab Bank Plc, which is based in Jordan. The lawsuit claims that the bank cooperated with, supported, assisted, funded, and encouraged terrorist actions that resulted in thousands of casualties and wounded. This is the first time a bank has been sued for alleged involvement in financing terrorism, although victims of terrorism have filed suits against both the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. READ MORE

“Jews have taken and are taking #antisemitism very seriously. Non-Jews must do the same”

Jews Are Going Underground
by Deborah Lipstadt
December 29, 2019

In a month of terrible anti-Semitic attacks, including a stabbing yesterday of multiple people at a Hanukkah celebration at a rabbi’s home in Monsey, New York, the news that most depressed me did not involve violence. It was not something done to Jews but something Jews did. A synagogue in the Netherlands is no longer publicly posting the times of prayer services. If you want to join a service, you have to know someone who is a member of the community. READ MORE

NEW YORK POST Karol Markowicz: How liberals are allowing anti-Semitism to flourish Like many of you, I’m thinking, “Not this subject again.” How many columns can be devoted to it? I’ve read them. I’ve written them. It’s exhausting, and it’s dreary. Jews are being beaten up, anti-Semitism flows some years and ebbs in others. So what? But it matters — gravely.

“The 1619 Project represents a new nadir in the politically correct, anti-American machinations of The New York Times”

NEW CRITERION
1619 & all that: On The New York Times’s recent disinformation campaign
January 2020

It was to console its core readership that The New York Times undertook The 1619 Project in a special flood-the-zone issue of its Sunday magazine in August and then in a snazzy, graphics-heavy series of features on its website. For two years, the Times had invested heavily in the vaudeville entertainment called “Trump–Russia.” The spectacular failure of its leading man, Special Counsel Robert Mueller, to deliver a happy ending to that fiasco underscored the essential futility of the entire enterprise. This was something that Dean Baquet, Executive Editor of the Times, grasped instantly. READ MORE

“We are living through the greatest improvement in human living standards in history”

SPECTATOR USA
We’ve just had the best decade in human history. Seriously
by Matt Ridley
December 22, 2019

Let nobody tell you that the second decade of the 21st century has been a bad time. We are living through the greatest improvement in human living standards in history. Extreme poverty has fallen below 10 percent of the world’s population for the first time. It was 60 percent when I was born. Global inequality has been plunging as Africa and Asia experience faster economic growth than Europe and North America; child mortality has fallen to record low levels; famine virtually went extinct; malaria, polio and heart disease are all in decline. Little of this made the news, because good news is no news. READ MORE

Multiple stabbings at the home of a Monsey rabbi
by Ron Kampeas
December 28, 2019

A man wielding a machete walked into a rabbi’s home in Monsey, New York and stabbed at least five people. In a series of tweets, the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council of the Hudson Valley said that five Hasidic Orthodox Jews were taken to hospital on Saturday night, two in critical condition. The Council said the assailant was an African American male, his face partially masked with a scarf. It said the attack took place at 9:50 pm Eastern Time. A number of outlets, including the Haredi Orthodox Vos Iz Neias, identified the building as the Rabbi Rottenberg Shul. Outlets said a Hanukkah party was underway when the attack occurred. READ MORE

Netanyahu wins primaries: “He re-learned a valuable lesson about political campaigning”

JERUSALEM POST
Primaries reinvigorate Netanyahu and tighten the political knot
by Lahav Harkov
December 28, 2019

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spent evening after evening over the past two weeks in the living rooms of Likud activists packed with supporters hanging on his every word. Sometimes he stood on chairs, or even tables to make sure the rapt audiences could see him and hear every word…With the Likud holding its first leadership primary in five years and the most serious race in 14 years, despite rival MK Gideon Sa’ar’s poor odds, Netanyahu decided it was time to get back in touch with the party’s grassroots. The plan worked, with Netanyahu winning a resounding 72.5% victory. Sa’ar’s 28.5% was respectable, but not what he and his supporters had hoped for. READ MORE
