US expects Israel to ensure ‘full accountability’ for Huwara riot
February 28, 2023

The U.S. administration said on Monday that it expects Israel to prosecute those who participated in the Huwara riot following the murder of two Israeli siblings in the Palestinian town and to compensate those whose homes and property were damaged or destroyed. “We expect the Israeli government to ensure full accountability and legal prosecution of those responsible for these attacks in addition to compensation for the loss of homes and property,” said State Department spokesperson Ned Price during a press briefing. He called the Sunday night riot by hundreds of Israeli Jews in the Palestinian town of Huwara “completely unacceptable.” READ MORE

…In 2015, the so-called knife intifada erupted in Israel. As the name of the yearlong wave of violence suggests, the period was characterized by frequent stabbing attacks by Palestinian terrorists against Israeli civilians. However, as noted by Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, head of the NGO Shurat Hadin, which takes legal action on behalf of terrorism victims, the period was also known as the “Facebook intifada.”The attackers were incited to violence on social media, explained Darshan-Leitner. “There were posts, thousands of posts, calling to kill, illustrating how to kill in videos, examples of how to twist the knife.” READ MORE

Firsthand Account: Antisemitism Comes to Classrooms in the Suburbs

February 27, 2023

As a high school student and parent within the Montgomery County public school (MCPS) system in Maryland — one of the most prominent in the country — we have come to see that despite its reputation of stellar academic performance and celebration of diversity, antisemitism is on the rise here. In fact, because MCPS could no longer ignore the numerous and increasing antisemitic incidents, earlier this month, a county-wide email was sent to all parents in the MCPS system, with a warning about rising antisemitism in the county. Israel’s high court has an ambition for judicial authority far beyond anything claimed by the bench in any other serious democracy

Supreme Debate in Israel Over Whether Judges — or Elected Representatives — Echoes in the West
Conrad Black
February 25, 2023

It was my privilege to have a public discussion in Toronto this week with the eminent Israeli-American journalist Caroline Glick on the immense controversy now raging in Israel over the Israeli government’s radical proposals for reforming the judicial system. That debate raises questions that will have to be addressed by many countries, including Canada. In Israel, Canada, and elsewhere, there has been a great accretion in the power of the higher courts to curtail legislative and executive authority. Israel adopted in 1992 a new set of “Basic Laws,” which granted the Supreme Court the power of judicial review, vesting it with the authority to intervene in legislative and executive matters and impose the criterion, not just of apparent legality, but of conformity with the underlying ethos of Israel as “a Jewish and democratic state.” READ MORE

Just as in Top Gun:Maverick: “To accomplish their mission, the pilots needed to take their planes dangerously beyond the maximum distance specified by the manufacturer. But the mission was a complete success, and all the pilots returned home safely”

The Whys and Wherefores of Hollywood’s Israel Distortions

February 23, 2023

…[Samuel] Goldman does not discuss Top Gun: Maverick—a truly great movie that presented an Israeli story without mentioning Israel—but Hollywood could have presented its American hero while still acknowledging the underlying Israeli history, simply by adding a brief statement at the end, just before the credits: In 1981, eight young Israeli pilots flew their F-16 planes for hours, deep into Iraq, often at a mere 100 feet above the ground, to bomb the heavily fortified nuclear facility being built by Saddam Hussein, in a two-minute strike just weeks before the facility would have become operational.  READ MORE

MOSAIC Hollywood’s Retreat into Universalism Many recent Hollywood movies seem to exhibit a fear of showing too much Jewish particularism. Why? Why do they hate us? And what are we going to do about it? Those questions were asked a lot in the United States in the years after 9/11. They have also been asked a lot by Jews over many, many more years. There may even be some similarities in the two groups of questioners, because there are certainly some similarities between the hatreds they inspire.

Anti-Semitism is First and Utmost a Danger to America and its Values. Heed our warnings.
Adam Milstein
March 1, 2023

In recent years, the threat against American Jews, and consequently the American people, has been mounting. Per FBI Director Wray, “A full 63% of religious hate crimes are motivated by antisemitism—targeting a group that makes up just 2.4% of our population.” Interestingly, this hate is one of the sole common threads between far-right, far-left, radical Muslim, and black supremacist ideologies. These groups are united by familiar antisemitic tropes of a nefarious and powerful Jewish or “Zionist” cabal that allegedly seeks to dominate and subjugate individuals, societies, and nations through behind-the-scenes scheming. Oman Joins Saudi Arabia in Opening Airspace to Israel

Israel thanks Oman for opening its airspace
February 23, 2023

Israel’s foreign minister on Thursday thanked Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said for opening Oman’s airspace to all carriers, including Israeli airlines, which will now be able to offer shorter routes to Asia. “It’s an historic and significant decision for the Israeli economy and the Israeli traveler,” said Foreign Minister Eli Cohen. Oman’s civil aviation authority on Thursday said the sultanate’s airspace will be open for all carriers that meet the authority’s requirements for overflying. U.S. President Joe Biden in July announced a Saudi air corridor for Israeli carriers might be implemented. READ MORE

Many Muslims see Israel as a leader in the battle against tyranny and jihad.

At no point did she seem to mind that I was a Jew, an Israeli and a “settler” who works in Hebron. All that mattered was that I was connected to Abraham and that Israel was a welcoming place. Here again, there was no mention of Palestine. As a woman who had left Pakistan for Texas, she had chosen liberty over a restrictive form of Islam. To her, Israel is a place where you can connect with religion and identity, and do so in freedom. In fact, she specifically mentioned her amazement and pleasure at being able to walk freely in Jerusalem at night. Although she did not say it, I guessed that Palestine is more like the oppressive Pakistan of her past. READ MORE

Can the whole world be wrong?
Melanie Phillips

One of the mysteries of the war against Israel is the extent to which a monstrously twisted narrative about Israel and the Palestinian Arabs—casting the former as evil and the latter as sanctified victims—has been absorbed by so many people. Still stranger, this narrative seems to be the driver of progressive politics. It’s not just that “intersectionality” demonizes the Jews, but that it is driven by an obsession with Palestinianism. As Corinne Blacker wrote in Tablet, “In queer and women’s studies programs, the topic of Palestine is regularly inserted into the most unlikely contexts, to the extent that one student in a class about queer history told me that they discussed nothing but Palestine.” READ MORE

Iranian hit squads would be deployed if Israel ever attacked #Iran

JEWISH CHRONICLE
Iran ‘mapping’ Jews in diaspora for kill squads
David Rose
February 16, 2023

Iran has been “mapping” the Jewish diaspora for an assassination campaign that will be triggered if Israel attacks its nuclear facilities, a Jewish woman who met Ayatollah Khamenei has told the JC. The chilling plan, disclosed at a high-level meeting in Tehran, involved identifying key Jewish figures and determining “how to strike and where”. The hit squads would be deployed if Israel ever attacked Iran, she was told, so “the diaspora would have a very nasty surprise”. The revenge plot was revealed to Catherine Perez-Shakdam, one of the few Westerners to be granted an audience with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. READ MORE
