Police, security agencies advise Jews to be on alert ahead of planned ‘National Day of Hate’ on Shabbat
Andrew Lapin
February 23, 2023

The police bulletins have circulated among Jews on social media, in WhatsApp chats and via email: A white supremacist group is calling for a “National Day of Hate” this Saturday and encouraging antisemites to vandalize and deface Jewish institutions. Information about the antisemitic campaign was first provided by the Chicago Police Department, and a “situational awareness alert” with NYPD insignia circulating online advises local Jewish communities to be on the lookout for suspicious activity. Law enforcement and security agencies in the Chicago and New York City areas, however, say that as of Thursday afternoon, there are no known concrete threats to Jewish institutions. READ MORE

February 19, 2023

More than 15,000 Ukrainians have immigrated to Israel since the outbreak of war in Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, according to figures released by The Jewish Agency for Israel and the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration. These olim have included many young people who enrolled in special absorption programs, mothers with young children, and senior citizens, as well as hundreds of Holocaust survivors. The olim arrived in Israel with the help of The Jewish Agency, which worked in cooperation with the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (IFCJ), and established emergency Aliyah centers in countries bordering Ukraine immediately once hostilities broke out. New survey shows overwhelming number of Israelis believe Birthright has critical role in bolstering Israel’s overall security and ties with Jews around the world

ISRAEL HAYOM (by agreement with JNS)
Taglit-Birthright ‘most influential organization’ in Diaspora-Israel relations
February 23, 2023

An overwhelming majority of Israelis believe that the Birthright Israel organization, also known as Taglit, is the most influential entity affecting the relationship between Diaspora Jews and Israel. Birthright Israel brings young Jews from all over the world on a 10-day free tour in Israel. According to its website, it seeks to strengthen Jewish identity, Jewish community, and connection with Israel by offering a free trip to Israel for young Jewish adults. The new survey, released on Wednesday, shows that 70% of Israelis believe it has become the most important organization in the bond between Jews in Israel and outside of it. Another finding from the survey shows that 88% of Israelis think that strengthening the ties with young Jews in the Diaspora is critical for Israel’s overall strength. READ MORE

It’s unclear what “latest polls” Amanpour might be referring to, given that every major recent poll from the Palestinian side shows exactly the opposite

Christiane Amanpour’s Dubious, and Likely Fabricated, Polling Data
David Litman
February 16, 2023

In yet another display of Christiane Amanpour’s prioritization of her disdain for Israel over journalistic integrity, the CNN anchor appears to have fabricated poll results to falsely suggest that the Palestinian side supports the two-state solution with Israel. The comments came during her interview with former Israeli ambassador Yael German on February 14, 2023…Recent polling by the Ramallah-based Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PCPSR) has consistently shown low support for a two-state solution.June 2022 poll found that only 28% of Palestinians support the concept of a two-state solution. In September, that figure rose to 37%, but dropped again in December to 32%. READ MORE

“There is just no evidence that masks make any difference”

NEW YORK TIMES
The Mask Mandates Did Nothing. Will Any Lessons Be Learned?
Bret Stephens
February 21, 2023

The most rigorous and comprehensive analysis of scientific studies conducted on the efficacy of masks for reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses — including Covid-19 — was published late last month. Its conclusions, said Tom Jefferson, the Oxford epidemiologist who is its lead author, were unambiguous. “There is just no evidence that they” — masks — “make any difference,” he told the journalist Maryanne Demasi. “Full stop.” But, wait, hold on. What about N-95 masks, as opposed to lower-quality surgical or cloth masks? “Makes no difference — none of it,” said Jefferson. READ MORE

Greetings from Jerusalem

I returned to Israel this week for my fifteenth trip to this country since 1971. I’ve been here since Saturday with CAMERA leadership for briefings with a range of fascinating people including MK’s, Knesset ministers, policy experts, attorneys, journalists, authors and NGO’s. Three topics were recurring in our conversations:

There have been a string of awful terror attacks in recent weeks and some fear this may mark the beginning of a third intifada. Though many American Jews and establishment politicians continue their infatuation with the Two State Solution, the majority of Israels seem to have been disabused of this notion. Having endured many years of Palestinian terror, incitement and rejectionism, they’ve concluded there is presently no “partner for peace.” And the Abraham Accords provide them further evidence that Israel’s neighbors don’t see resolution of the Palestinian conflict as integral to moving forward.

Need for judicial reforms to correct what some see as a rigged system that is the product of other judicial “reforms” which date to the 1980’s and the Aharon Barak era. The attacks from the left to addressing this have been hyperbolic and along partisan lines calling it a “threat to democracy” in some cases advocating violence. This is curious as leaders of the left are on the record themselves calling for reforms. Conservatives point to the recent elections as evidence most Israelis would like to bring Israel’s courts in line with other western democracies by bringing diversity to the courts, also limiting their ability to do certain things like invalidating government appointments and Knesset legislation for “lack of reasonableness.” This controversy has caused protests and political discord, amplified by a sympathetic media, here and abroad.

Iran and their nuclear program. What will the Netanyahu government do about this as they strategize their relationship with the Biden administration and Russia, all made more complex by the Ukraine invasion. The United Nations tells us that Iran already has enough enriched uranium to build several nuclear weapons, so there isn’t unlimited time to address Israel’s existential problem.

As always, thanks for following my blog :)

Israel’s Foreign minister pledges air defense warning system for Ukraine within months, looks to increase cooperation against Tehran in international bodies

Hosting FM Cohen in Kyiv, Zelensky says Iran is ‘common enemy’
Lazar Berman
February 16, 2023

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky told Foreign Minister Eli Cohen that Iran is a “common enemy” during their meeting in Kyiv on Thursday. The two spoke about deepening cooperation against Iran in international fora, according to Cohen. “The evil face of Iran is being revealed in Ukraine,” Cohen told Zelensky. Iran has been supplying Russia with drones used to attack Ukraine, including airstrikes on civilian infrastructure. Cohen stressed to Zelensky that Israel “supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” according to the Foreign Ministry. Zelensky said after the meeting that Israel “has always been our important partner in the Middle East.” READ MORE

Glick: The left isn’t worried about democracy. It doesn’t like democracy. It likes its oligarchy.

It’s not about democracy
Caroline Glick
February 10, 2023

What’s happening in Israel is not what it seems. The left, in all its component parts, is not fighting against an effort by the government and the Knesset to destroy Israel’s democracy. We know this for three reasons. First, the leaders of the fight against judicial reform, who claim that if Justice Minister Yariv Levin’s judicial reform package now making its way through the legislative process in the Knesset passes, Israeli democracy will die, know that this isn’t true. In a past address to the Kohelet Forum, opposition leader Yair Lapid set out a position on judicial activism completely aligned with Levin’s package. Indeed, Lapid’s remarks laid the foundations of the current reform. READ MORE

JNS Fiamma Nirenstein: Israel’s civil discourse is broken Israel is suffering today. Its civil discourse is broken and harsh. At the same time, terror is spiking. During the general strike against the current government’s judicial reform plan on Monday, accompanied by a march on the Knesset, two terrorist attacks were added to the five that have left 10 people dead in the past two weeks. On a packed bus, a 13-year-old boy began to stab innocent civilians. A civilian security guard reacting to the attack accidentally shot and killed a Border Police officer. Then, a car-ramming took place at Tapuah Junction.

The Nakba story, “perhaps the most persistent big lie of the past 75 years”

COMMENTARY
The Truth Behind the Palestinian ‘Catastrophe’
Sol Stern
March 2023

Israel will soon celebrate the 75th anniversary of its independence. Around the same time, Palestinians will stage their annual Nakba Day, the official commemoration held every year on May 15 to protest Israel’s creation. The marking of this supposed “catastrophe” (nakba) will surely be a key feature of the elite media discussion of Israel’s anniversary. As such, it will represent an ongoing public-relations triumph for the Palestinians—and a victory for deceit and disinformation. For the past quarter century, leaders of the Palestinian Authority have been insistent that their people were innocent victims of a historically unprecedented crime in 1948, a crime that is frequently mentioned in the same breath as the Holocaust. Their account is an example of the phenomenon called the “big lie.”READ MORE

JNS Jonathan Tobin: Why keep pretending that Jews building homes prevents peace? Palestinian terrorism and disinterest in a two-state solution ensure that peace is impossible. But the United States and its allies prefer to focus on Israeli housing starts.

Israel’s Operation Olive Branch delegation will conclude its rescue operations in Turkey and return to Israel in the coming days, according to a Sunday statement from the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.  The IDF delegation thus far has been able to rescue a total of 19 people trapped in the rubble in the aftermath of Turkey’s recent devastating earthquake that has already claimed the lives of over 25,000 people…”We knew that there was a certain level of risk in sending our team to this area of Turkey, which is close to the Syrian border, but we took the necessary steps in order to mitigate the threat for the sake of our lifesaving mission,” United Hatzalah vice president of operations Dov Maisel explained.
