Words are not violence. Violence is violence.

COMMON SENSE
We Ignored Salman Rushdie’s Warning
Bari Weiss
August 13, 2022

We live in a culture in which many of the most celebrated people occupying the highest perches believe that words are violence. In this, they have much in common with Iranian Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who issued the first fatwa against Salman Rushdie in 1989, and with Hadi Matar, the 24-year-old who, yesterday, appears to have fulfilled his command when he stabbed the author in the neck on a stage in Western New York. The first group believes they are motivated by inclusion and tolerance—that it’s possible to create something even better than liberalism, a utopian society where no one is ever offended. The second we all recognize as religious fanatics. But it is the indulgence and cowardice of the words are violence crowd that has empowered the second and allowed us to reach this moment, when a fanatic rushes the stage of a literary conference with a knife and plunges it into one of the bravest writers alive. THE HILL Jonathan Schanzer: Rushdie attack reveals — again — true nature of Iranian regime In 1989, Ayatollah Khomeini sentenced Rushdie to death. On Tehran radio, the Supreme leader stated: “I would like to inform all intrepid Muslims in the world that the author of the book Satanic Verses, which has been compiled, printed, and published in opposition to Islam, the Prophet, and the Qur’an, and those publishers who were aware of its contents, are sentenced to death. I call on all zealous Muslims to execute them quickly, where they find them.” In essence, Khomeini pitted Islam against the West.  A $2.8 million bounty was put on Rushdie’s head.

NEW YORK POST Salman Rushdie attacker praises Iran’s ayatollah, surprised author survived: jailhouse interview The New Jersey man who allegedly stabbed Salman Rushdie in Western New York last week praised Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini in an exclusive jailhouse interview with The Post on Wednesday — and admitted he didn’t think the author would survive the attack.

NYT said to cut Gaza stringer loose for urging murder of Israelis
August 14, 2022

The New York Times has cut ties with Gaza-based stringer Fady Hanona over a string of anti-Semitic social media posts brought to light by Honest Reporting, the media watchdog said on Saturday. The NGO, that according to its website “monitors the media for bias against Israel,” published a list of post by Hanona, who was a contributor to at least six articles published by the Times during the latest round of fighting between Israel and Gaza-based terror groups. “I don’t accept a Jew, Israeli or Zionist, or anyone else who speaks Hebrew. I’m with killing them wherever they are: children, elderly people, and soldiers,” wrote Hanona. READ MORE

Why is Joe Biden alternately ignoring and funding the ever-closer alliance between Iran and Putin?

Are Russia and Iran forging a strategic alliance? Vladimir Putin’s recent trip to Tehran for a trilateral summit with Iranian leaders and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggests so. As does Russia’s use of imported Iranian drones, based on stolen U.S. technology. As does the $10 billion role being openly played by Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear company, in helping Iran build its nuclear weapons program. Yet the Biden administration prefers to see things differently. Ignoring large sections of observable reality, President Joe Biden continues to rely on Russia as a good faith mediator to negotiate a return to the failed Iran nuclear deal of 2015—better known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).  READ MORE

Abbas comparison to systematic killing of 6 million Jews drew ire and calls for an apology from around the world

Mahmoud Abbas and the ‘monstrous lie’ of the 50 Holocausts committed by Israel against Palestinians
Nicole Jansezian
August 17, 2022

Rather than apologize when asked by a reporter whether he regretted the murder by Palestinians of 11 Israelis 50 years ago at the Munich Olympics, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas instead shifted the blame – saying Israel has committed “50 Holocausts” against Palestinians. Making the false claim all the more outrageous, Abbas compared the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the Holocaust in an address to a German crowd on German soil while standing next to Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin on Tuesday. “The field of research into the US-Israel relationship is likewise skewed, according to Mead, by writers who are convinced that Jews have been at the center of the decision-making”

ELDER OF ZIYON
Book review: The Arc of a Covenant by Walter Russell Mead
August 14, 2022

The Arc of a Covenant is a well-researched book about the history of the US-Israel relationship. And it destroys many myths in the process. Most books about the US and Israel are written by one of two kinds of people: Zionists and anti-Zionists. Both of those suffer from a skewed vision where the American Zionists and Israeli politicians are considered critical players in the drama. Walter Russell Mead calls the anti-Zionists who believe in a nefarious and outsized role of Jews in steering the US towards a disaster in foreign policy “Vulcanists.” READ MORE

The 1981 winner of Peru’s competition of Israel’s International Bible Contest did not come from among the country’s many devoted Christians nor from Lima’s elite Jewish school. Instead, the top prize went to Victor Chico, a self-taught man in his thirties who practiced Judaism with a small sect of Peruvian natives led by a man named Segundo Villanueva. Spurred initially by Villanueva’s searching for truth as a religious Christian, the group had adopted Jewish practices and beliefs, celebrated holidays and even hired a doctor to circumcise the men. The Mar-a-Lago raid has finished off public trust in federal law enforcement

Sanctuary Cities Seethe as Illegal Immigrants Actually Arrive
Charles Lipson
August 17, 2022

The surest sign that public policies are simply virtue signals is when the messages don’t cost anything. The easiest way to tell when that signal starts to fail is to watch politicians flounder as the costs start to rise and voters demand relief. It was free—and meaningless—for progressive churches to post banners calling themselves “nuclear free zones” during the Reagan era. Their dwindling congregations loved it. It was free, after George Floyd‘s murder, to post woke catechism signs on your front lawn, proclaiming “In this house, we believe: Black Lives Matter, women’s rights are human rights, no human is illegal” and so on. Maybe the neighbors gave you high-fives. And for years it has been free for deep-blue cities to proclaim themselves “sanctuaries” for illegal immigrants. That’s changing now that voters want some sanctuary for themselves. READ MORE

SPECTATOR Charles Lipson: Cleaning house at the FBI and Justice Department The two most striking features of the FBI’s unprecedented raid on Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home are its bold intrusiveness and the public’s mistrust of the Bureau’s honesty and integrity.

Hamas helpfully suggests media lie about Gazan provication with Israel; when is challenged, policy changed

Hamas issues, then rescinds, sweeping rules on Gaza coverage

Gaza’s militant Hamas rulers issued sweeping new restrictions on journalists after the recent conflict there, but then rescinded them, a group representing foreign media in Israel and the Palestinian territories said Tuesday. Palestinians who work with foreign journalists were first informed of the new rules earlier this week in messages sent by the Hamas-run Interior Ministry. They were ordered not to report on Gazans killed by misfired Palestinian rockets or the military capabilities of Palestinian armed groups, and were told to blame Israel for the recent escalation. The Foreign Press Association, which represents international media, including The Associated Press, said the guidelines were rescinded after discussions with authorities in Gaza. READ MORE

CAMERA BLOG Alex Safian: In Recent Fighting With Islamic Jihad, Half of Gaza Deaths Were Likely Caused by Errant Palestinian Rockets Putting these factors together for the present hostilities, based on the current data it can be expected that 200 errant Palestinian rockets would have killed roughly 27 Gaza residents, or about half of the currently known (or perhaps admitted) death toll according to Hamas.

ELDER OF ZIYON Jabaliya: How the Media Uses “Balance” to Obfuscate the Truth The footage of the Islamic Jihad rocket doubling back on Jabaliya was like something out of a Cecil B. DeMille movie. Except that it was real. The rocket begins its journey; its target, Israeli civilians. Then, all of a sudden, with a “whoosh,” the rocket reverses course, as if the hand of God itself were guiding it away from the Jewish people.

…PIJ [Palestinian Islamic Jihad], however, cannot abide even a temporary détente. Israeli intelligence learned that the group was preparing terrorist attacks not only from Gaza but also from the northern West Bank. PIJ fighters have been gradually displacing the PA security forces in this area and clashing with the Israeli Defense Forces, which have been responding to a wave of terrorist attacks that has claimed 19 Israeli lives since March. Knowing PIJ’s intentions, the Israelis decided it was necessary to do what they could to degrade its capabilities. READ MORE

Iran Revolutionary Guard Member Charged With Plot to Murder John Bolton, US Justice Dept Says
Reuters
August 10, 2022

The United States charged a member of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Corps on Wednesday with plotting to murder John Bolton, a national security adviser to former President Donald Trump. The Justice Department alleged that Shahram Poursafi, also known as Mehdi Rezayi, 45, of Tehran, was likely motivated to kill Bolton in retaliation for the death of Qassem Soleimani, a commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps killed in a US drone strike in January 2020…Investigators said the following month Poursafi contacted the informant on an encrypted messaging application and offered the person $250,000 to hire someone to “eliminate” Bolton — an amount that would later be negotiated up to $300,000.
