A new documentary about the making of #FiddlerOnTheRoof evokes wonder at our idealization of a past that wasn’t very nice

…Remember the wedding scene in Fiddler? Tevye is warned by a friendly, local official that he was ordered to disrupt, make a little trouble, nothing too serious … but the real pogroms were all too serious. According to Astashkevich, pogroms came in waves, one after the other, and each one may have “lasted for ten days while the town changed hands … (then) the pogrom would start over with the most vigorous brutality.” In this time period (1917-1921), there were “over a thousand pogroms in about five hundred localities.” Astashkevich considers this a “genocide” and the frequent, systematic use of rape as a weapon may be considered “genocidal rape.” READ MORE

City officials say they are working with police and the FBI after flyers containing “repugnant” anti-Semitic hate speech were found littered in Highland Park on Yom HaShoah, a Holocaust remembrance day. The City of Highland Park said in a statement that members of the community, along with other communities throughout the North Shore, discovered the flyers in their neighborhoods Thursday morning. The Highland Park Police Department is working closely with area police departments, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to “ensure continued community safety.” READ MORE

“Biden administration continues to court Iran and seems poised to remove the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps from the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations even as the IRGC has deployed cells to assassinate former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former national security advisor John Bolton”

…The [Biden] administration green-lighted the transfer to Tehran of billions of dollars of Iranian government funds frozen under US sanctions imposed by Trump’s maximum pressure campaign. The administration stopped enforcing bans on Iranian oil and gas exports. Due to the administration’s moves, today Iran reportedly earns as much from oil and gas exports as it did before Trump barred the sale of Iranian fuels on international markets. The Biden administration blocked the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency from publishing a harsh report condemning Iran’s massive breaches of the 2015 nuclear deal and outlining its illicit nuclear activities…READ MORE

The embrace of woke ideology is at odds with basic American values of equality. It also means all government departments will implement toxic intersectional and critical race theory ideas.

Biden’s ‘equity’ agenda hurts Israel and American Jews
Jonathan Tobin
April 29, 2022

…The notion that our goal should be equity rather than equality of opportunity is a fundamental aspect of critical race theory and the entire mindset of leftist ideology that labels the United States an irredeemably racist nation. That assumption guides every aspect of implementing an equity agenda and leads inevitably to race-based preference policies. In academia, that means affirmative action programs intended to correct past injustices by admissions policies that give advantages to some minorities deemed victims, primarily those who can qualify as “people of color,” regardless of their economic status. It places obstacles in front of others who do not qualify for victim status, regardless of whether they are members of minority groups like Asians and Jews. READ MORE

Israeli PM’s family receives death threat and bullet in mail

April 27, 2022

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s teenage son has received a death threat and bullet in the mail, Israeli officials said Thursday, he second such warning against the Israeli leader’s family this week. The threats have come at a time of deep political divisions in Israel. In a major speech on Wednesday night marking Israel’s Holocaust memorial day, Bennett had spoken out against the polarization in Israel, urging citizens not to let internal divisions rip society apart…Bennett’s government is made up of eight parties from across the political spectrum, including religious nationalists, centrists and an Islamic party. It is the first Arab party to be part of a governing coalition. These parties have little in common beyond their shared animosity to former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. READ MORE

“Jordan has demanded that Israel relinquish more control over Temple Mount to the Wakf following the recent terror wave and Temple Mount conflicts”

JERUSALEM POST
Jordan’s attitude towards Temple Mount is antisemitic and hypocritical

April 28, 2022

Thousands of men shouted “Khaybar, Khaybar ya Yahoud” – a call to massacre the Jews – outside al-Aqsa Mosque on Wednesday night, while at Yad Vashem, Holocaust survivors lit memorial candles and Israel’s leaders gave speeches mourning the six million murdered in the Nazi genocide of the Jews. In other words, at the same time as Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day was beginning, some Muslim worshipers were saying that, actually, mass murder of Jews sounds like a good idea. This is not an empty threat, as we saw with the wave of terrorist attacks last month and the rioting on the Temple Mount in recent weeks. READ MORE

George Santayana is credited with observing that “those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it.” He was referring to negative and tragic events of the past, and the acts and people who precipitated them, as well as the painful lessons they imparted. But what of the people who forget the positive developments of the past and the positive lessons? Surely, they will not repeat them. What will come of such people? April 25 is one of the most significant dates in Jewish history, yet stop 100 Jews exiting a synagogue or Federation event to ask them why the date is significant, and not one will come up with the correct answer…or perhaps any answer. …All of you have done more than I ever could to convince my fellow Jews that the left doesn’t just have a Corbyn problem or a Tlaib problem or a Farrakhan problem. It has a big, fat Jew-hatred problem right in its ideological core. This time it happened to rear its head at one of the best law schools in the country. One where the name Steinhardt adorns the buildings and about a quarter of the students are Jews. Yes, even here. Especially here. Thank you for starting one of those “courageous conversations” we’re always supposed to have. This one not about gender or systemic racism or climate change, but about the burning debate over whether it is fantastic or merely acceptable that innocent Jews are being murdered in IsraelREAD MORE

4NBC NEW YORK Antisemitic Incidents, Assaults Hit All-Time Highs in New York and New Jersey, ADL Says Antisemitic incidents in the United States hit an all-time high in 2021, and New York and New Jersey accounted for nearly 30% of the reported total, the Anti-Defamation League said Tuesday. Incidents (vandalism, harassment, assault) were up sharply last year, the ADL said in its annual summary – a function of pandemic restrictions decreasing, but also backlash to Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in May 2021.

Why Is the Biden Administration Determined to Help Terrorist Iran Get a Bomb?
Majid Rafizadeh
April 23, 2022

Why would any administration in its right mind permit an official state sponsor of terrorism, the Islamic Republic of Iran, to have nuclear weapons, as well as billions of dollars that will assuredly not be used for a “GI Bill for returning members of the Revolutionary Guard”? Just this week, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan called Iran, a “sponsor of terrorism.” Calls and warnings against reviving the 2015 nuclear, however, seem to be falling on deaf ears, as the Biden administration appears determined to reach a deal that would enable a state that has been trying to take over the entire Middle East for decades — and already controls Lebanon, Yemen, Syria and Iraq — to have nuclear weapons, the ballistic missiles to deliver them, and billions of dollars to further its well-documented terrorism. De-Fund the pro-terrorist movement on campus

The Top Ten Jew-Hating Colleges and Universities

April 25, 2022

On college campuses across America, hatred and bigotry directed against Jews is at an all-time high. It is now almost commonplace for swastikas to appear in university halls and restrooms or scrawled on Jewish fraternity houses. Hundreds of chapters of the Hamas-funded terrorist support group, Students for Justice in Palestine, hold events promoting anti-Semitic speakers who spread terrorist propaganda, describing Israel – created the same way Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq were created—as a “settler-colonial state” that engages in “ethnic cleansing.” Under the influence of these terrorist-supporting hate groups, university departments have lined up to endorse statements incorporating the same genocidal lies.
