Dozens injured as Palestinians riot in Jerusalem, al-Aqsa
by Staff and Tzvi Joffre
May 9, 2021
Over 100 Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli security forces in Jerusalem on Saturday night and Sunday morning, amid violent riots throughout Jerusalem and the West Bank fueled by tensions surrounding planned evictions in east Jerusalem. Over 90,000 worshippers visited the al-Aqsa mosque on Saturday night to mark Laylat al-Qadr, which commemorates the night on which the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. On Sunday morning, clashes broke out on the Temple Mount between Palestinians and Israeli forces, with the doors of at least one of the gates to the compound being closed amid the clashes. At least 10 people were injured amid the clashes on the Temple Mount on Sunday morning. READ MORE

Jewish Republicans divided over fate of Cheney in battle with Trump loyalists
by Dmitriy Shapiro
May 7, 2021
As Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives prepare to decide whether or not to vote next week on removing Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) from the House GOP conference chair position, support for the legislator among Jewish Republicans remains high from years of being a close ally on Jewish issues in Congress and during the Bush administration. Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said in a phone call with JNS on Thursday that RJC has supported Cheney and her father, former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, for decades, and that is unlikely to change despite the current infighting within the House Republican caucus. Israeli actress Noa Tishby’s ‘Simple Guide’ to Israel shakes up US progressives
by Robert Sarner
May 6, 2021
Shortly after being interviewed recently on popular American TV talk show “The View,” Noa Tishby received a text message from a friend. The message had her seething later that morning during a Zoom interview with The Times of Israel. In her on-air chat with co-host Meghan McCain, the Israeli-American actor and producer discussed her new book, “Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth.” Tishby said that given it’s been endorsed by both liberal political commentator Bill Maher and conservative counterpart Ben Shapiro, the book is balanced. She also said anti-Zionism is a politically correct version of antisemitism. READ MORE

Israel’s next pioneer: meet the country’s new astronaut
by Yafit Ovadia
May 7, 2021
If given the opportunity, Israel’s next astronaut would probably abstain from calling himself a hero, but in February 2022 upon his take off from Cape Canaveral in Florida with three other astronauts, he will make history for an entire tiny yet powerful nation. Eytan Stibbe (62) is slated to be the State of Israel’s next astronaut and has an impressive career path behind him. Ahead of his announcement of the 44 Israeli experiments which he will take with him to the International Space Station that was unveiled on Wednesday, he spoke to the media for the first time after months of quiet and shared his thoughts about space exploration, science, and his upcoming mission. The News Unfit to Print in The New York Times
by Ricki Hollander
May 7, 2021
The case of Jordan Burnette and his repeated attacks on synagogues in New York’s Bronx borough comes at a period when hate crimes against Jews in New York are at alarmingly high levels. Over a period of several nights in late April, the 29-year-old Burnette went on a vandalism spree, smashing windows, trashing prayer books, and inflicting considerable property damage in Jewish institutes in the Riverdale neighborhood, and causing apprehension and fear in the Jewish community. After an intensive search by the New York Police Department’s Hate Crime Unit, which released surveillance footage of the perpetrator attacking a synagogue, Burnette was arrested. Under the state’s new bail laws, however, he was subsequently released under supervision…READ MORE

Why Human Rights Watch is attacking Israel’s Law of Return
by Karen Bekker
May 4, 2021
If you’re Jewish and live in the Diaspora, chances are there’s been some event in the news or in politics that at some point has made you say to yourself, “Well, if things really go south here, I can always go to Israel.” I’m sure many American Jews had those thoughts after the murders in Pittsburgh, Poway, Jersey City and Monsey. In the United States in 2019, the most recent year for which FBI data is available, there were 953 hate crimes committed against Jews, or more than 60 percent of religiously based hate crimes. Many French Jews are probably having such thoughts now, since France’s highest court has ruled, functionally, that there is no criminal responsibility for killing a Jew if the killer was high on marijuana. Dad who yanked child from ‘woke’ Manhattan school says others are doing the same
By Natalie O’Neill and Lee Brown
May 5, 2021
A dad who yanked his daughter from her $43,000-per-year Manhattan private school in outrage over the “woke” teaching of critical race theory says other angry parents are now following his example — as he described the movement as a form of “child abuse.” “Nobody I’ve spoken to believes this is good for children,” Harvey Goldman told The Post Wednesday. “I am personally hearing from a handful of parents who are also pulling their kids out of the school — and their friends are, too.” Goldman said the Heschel School, on West End Avenue near 60th Street, has taught inappropriate lessons centering on race and gender, which many parents have no clue about. Lapid, Bennett hope to form government within a week
by Gil Hoffman
May 5, 2021
Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid and Yamina chairman Naftali Bennett intend to engage in marathon talks to form a unity government beginning Thursday after President Reuven Rivlin announced Wednesday night that he is entrusting Lapid with the second mandate to form a government. Lapid and Bennett wanted to form a government as soon as possible and believe it can be done within a week. They expressed concern that if they did not hurry, their efforts could be harmed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose mandate ended Tuesday night without a coalition being formed and who is trying to sabotage the formation of a government that would replace him. ISRAEL HAYOM PM warns of ‘dangerous’ left-wing rule as president picks rival to form government “It … became clear that Yair Lapid has the possibility to form a government that will win parliament’s approval, but there are many difficulties,” President Rivlin says as he taps Yair Lapid with task of forming next government.
ARTUZ SHEVA Shaked: Bennett did everything possible to form a right-wing government Since the election, Naftali and I have worked very hard to form a right-wing government. This has been very, very difficult. It is possible to tell stories and fill the country with spin doctoring, but in the end Netanyahu was unable to form a right-wing government, due to opposition from Sa’ar and Liberman, and because of Bezalel’s stubbornness. From the beginning, Yamina’s seven seats were part of the right-wing bloc, without conditions and without boycotts.
