More and more Israeli Arabs want to be known just as Israelis. Arabs living in the disputed territories by and large don’t want to live in a despotic and corrupt Palestine state. They want Israeli passports and to live in Israel, under the rule of law and guarantees of human rights. An increasing number of the Arab young, who are on Twitter and Facebook and all the rest of it, don’t want to fight the unending battles of the seventh century. READ MORE

A 19-year-old Syrian asylum-seeker turned himself in to police Thursday after his violent attack on a man wearing a Jewish skullcap in Berlin caused outrage across Germany.  The 21-year-old victim, an Arab Israeli, caught Tuesday’s assault on video. It quickly went viral and reopened a debate about anti-Semitism in the country…The video shows the attacker whipping the Israeli with a belt while shouting “Yehudi!” or Jew, in Arabic. The victim, Adam Armoush, said he’s not Jewish but wore the skullcap as an experiment because he didn’t believe a friend who told him it’s too dangerous to wear one in public in Germany. READ MORE

In anticipation of Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, which will be commemorated Tuesday night and Wednesday, two organizations…have established a website to allow users to remember and honor the 23,632 soldiers and security forces who have died defending the land of Israel. The website, Yizkereim…was produced by Olami, an organization seeking to connect Jewish students with their heritage, and the Afikim Foundation, which attempts to connect Diaspora Jewry to Israel…The website allows users to search through a database of names. On the eve of Israel’s 70th Independence Day, its population stands at 8,842,000, of whom 74.5 percent are Jewish, according to figures released on Monday by the Central Bureau of Statistics. The Jewish population stands at approximately 6.589 million, while Arabs number some 1.849 million, 20.9% of the population. There are approximately 404,000 citizens, 4.6%, who are non-Arab Christians or members of other ethnic groups. Over the past 12 months some 177,000 babies were born, 41,000 Israelis died and 28,000 immigrants arrived.
