Maryland High School Students Stage Walkout to Protest Antisemitism

December 22, 2022

Students at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland staged a walkout on Thursday to protest antisemitism, a local ABC outlet reported on Thursday. On Saturday, “Jews not welcome” was graffitied on the school’s monument sign. The culprits have not yet been identified, and the incident has prompted alarm among students and staff at the school.  “The worst part about what happened to our sign is that the people who wrote it weren’t entirely wrong,” student Rachel Barold said to the hundreds of students who attended the demonstration, according to footage obtained by ABC 7. “Whitman and MCPS [Montgomery County Public Schools] hasn’t been a welcoming community to Jewish people for a long time, and this isn’t an issue that’s unique to MCPS, it’s an issue around the country and around the Earth.” READ MORE

Netanyahu on a collision course with US Jewry, Biden, Arab allies
Tovah Lazaroff
December 22, 2022

Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu has yet to take office, and he already is on a collision course with both liberal American Jews and the Biden administration. Also add to them the European Union and Israel’s new-found allies in the Middle East under the Abraham Accords. On Thursday night, outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid warned that Netanyahu’s government “will be the first in the history of the state that the United States won’t view as its closest ally.” Reform and Conservative Jews, who are among the most influential leaders of American Jewry, “won’t see Israel as their second home,” he predicted. Lapid spoke after Netanyahu’s government partners published details of their coalition agreements that will be signed in the coming days. READ MORE

Victims of Terrorism Sue Biden Admin for Sending Taxpayer Aid to Palestinians
Adam Kredo
December 20, 2022

Victims of Palestinian terror attacks are suing the Biden administration for awarding nearly half a billion dollars in U.S. taxpayer funds to the Palestinian government, which allegedly uses these funds to pay convicted terrorists and their families. The lawsuit, filed in federal court on Tuesday by American victims of Palestinian terror attacks and Rep. Ronny Jackson (R., Texas), alleges the Biden administration is in violation of federal law for resuming U.S. aid to the Palestinian government, according to a copy of the lawsuit exclusively obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. The Trump administration froze these funds due to the Palestinian government’s financial support for terrorists as part of a program known as pay-to-slay. READ MORE

“The failure of journalists, in particular, to grasp the ideological causes of the attacks on the Jewish state in 2000 helped to prevent a coherent understanding of the Islamist attacks on the United States and Europe that followed”

Islamist Terror; Journalistic Error
Jeffrey Herf
December 2, 2022

In “Can The Whole World” Be Wrong?,” Richard Landes, a historian of apocalyptic movements in medieval Europe, re-examines the reporting of Palestinian attacks on Israel, starting with the Second Intifada that began in September 2000. Principally, he looks at the ways in which postcolonial ideology and the intimidation of journalists have been used to obscure the links between Islamist ideology and terrorist practice, and how this process disfigures public discourse and understanding…Since the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran after the revolution of 1979, the publication of the Hamas Covenant in 1988, and al Qaeda’s declaration of jihad against Jews and Crusaders in 1998, the governments of the West’s liberal democracies have, with only a few exceptions, been reluctant to speak clearly about the causal connection between Islamist ideology and violence. Why Is the FBI Investigating Israel?
Matthew Continetti
January 2023

…At the time of writing, no one knows the details of the FBI inquiry, or the identity of the official who authorized it, or how long it will go on before the U.S. government realizes its ineffectuality. What is known is that the anti-Israel gang successfully bullied an agency of the United States government into taking the extraordinary step of treating the military of the Jewish state as a criminal enterprise, with no consideration of the potential fallout in the Greater Middle East or the precedent that might be set for U.S. soldiers in future actions. Seeking latitude to press liberal causes, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs distances itself from federations
Ron Kampeas
December 19, 2022

The Jewish Council for Public Affairs, the onetime standard-bearer for outreach to the non-Jewish world whose influence has waned, is loosening its financial and organizational ties to the Jewish Federations of North America in a bid to reassert its traditional role. The decision to go it alone, announced Monday in a press release and a two-page brochure that will go out to Jewish organizations, will free the JCPA to pursue liberal agenda items that are favored by American Jews but can alienate or unsettle donors to the federation system who are more conservative or at least more cautious about maintaining an appearance of being nonpartisan. New York Times slammed over ‘swastika’ crossword on first day of Hanukkah: ‘Disgusting’
Ben Cost
December 19, 2022

The New York Times is being ripped by social media users for publishing what they deemed a swastika-shaped crossword puzzle on the first night of Hanukkah. The fraught Sunday brain-teaser, titled “Some Theme’s Missing,” had been concocted by Washington, DC-based consulting manager Ryan McCarty, who has formulated 22 other puzzles for the paper. “Thrilled to have my first Sunday puzzle in The Times! This grid features one of my favorite open middles that I’ve made as it pulls from a variety of subject areas,” McCarty gushed in a section of the paper titled Constructor Notes. He wrote that he’d “originally tried to make it work in a 15×15 grid but then decided to expand the grid out to a Sunday-size puzzle with a fun whirlpool shape.” READ MORE

Stanford’s “Elimination of Harmful Language Initiative” aims to educate people about the impact that ‘racist, violent and biased’ words have

American, grandfather, brave and master: Words Stanford University includes in its index of ‘harmful language’ because they are ‘ableist, sexist or racist’
Jessica Warren
December 20, 2022

Stanford University has published an index of ‘harmful language’ that it wants to eliminate because the terms are ‘ableist, ageist or racist‘ — including the word American — as it calls for US citizen to be used instead. The University revealed the plan in May, and wants to remove the words from its IT systems and websites, with grandfather, brave and master are also on the list…Elsewhere it also asks for the term ‘abort’ to be changed to ‘end’ or ‘cancel’, instead of linking it to abortion. The site also suggests replacing ‘Karen’ with ‘demanding or entitled White woman’, while a ‘child prostitute’ could be changed to a ‘child who has been trafficked’. READ MORE

Bills advance to enable ministries for Smotrich, Deri
December 15, 2022

Bills to allow religious lawmakers Bezalel Smotrich and Aryeh Deri passed early Friday on their first readings in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament. The bills amend Israel’s Basic Laws, which act as the country’s constitution, aimed at enabling the lawmakers to take office as desired ministers as part of coalition agreements with prime minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu. While these bills have raised protest among opposition leaders, the 63-52 vote foreshadows the right-wing and religious ministers getting what they want. Politicians convicted in the past seven years cannot currently serve as ministers. Deri, the head of Israel’s Sephardic religious Shas party, earlier this year admitted to minor tax offenses in exchange for a suspended sentence of one year…READ MORE

The State of the Black-Jewish Relationship in America
Bari Weiss
December 11, 2022

Last month, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, was all over the internet with his conspiratorial, antisemitic tirades. Most recently, he went on Alex Jones’s InfoWars show with White Nationalist Nick Fuentes and said things like, “I love Nazis” and “I see good things about Hitler.” I wish it was just that…But what’s happened over the last month isn’t about one celebrity or basketball player. As Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and I talked about recently, the antisemitic ideas we’ve seen in the news lately are not new in America. Including among Black Americans. On the latest episode of Honestly, we put together a roundtable to discuss the history and state of of Black-Jewish relations in America with guests Chloe ValdaryBret StephensEli Lake and Kmele Foster.
