Coronavirus takes toll on religious life as rabbis advise against ritual kissing
by Stuart Winer
March 4, 2020

Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel David Lau on Wednesday said Israelis should avoid touching and kissing mezuzahs affixed to doorframes, as religious figures took steps to avoid the spread of the novel coronavirus via Jewish rites. At a time when “we are witnesses to the spread of a serious disease, there is no doubt that one should not kiss or touch the mezuzah at all,” Lau wrote in a statement. “It is enough for a person to think about it during his entering and exiting.”…There is a Jewish custom to touch the mezuzah when entering or leaving a room, and many also then kiss their fingers afterward. “Trump’s peace plan calls attention to Palestinian division and the collapse of the Arab political order”

WALL STREET JOURNAL
Israel’s New Diplomatic Moment
by Jonathan Spyer
March 3, 2020

…Jerusalem’s Palestinians remain in a kind of limbo. Israel places barriers before their acquisition of full citizenship, and they can complain justly of large discrepancies in municipal funding. Still, something is stirring from below. The number of Palestinian Jerusalemites electing to educate their children in schools offering an Israeli matriculation exam is tripling each year, according to David Koren, an Education Ministry official. Hebrew courses for Arabs are flourishing. Given the choice, Jerusalem’s Palestinians are choosing attachment to stable, First World Israel over absorption into the corrupt, dysfunctional Palestinian Authority. READ MORE

Good News: Paterson, N.J., Gets Muslim Police Chief and Islamic Call to Prayer Over Loudspeakers
by Robert Spencer
February 26, 2020

The next Democratic debate isn’t in Paterson, New Jersey, but it should be: that unlikely city is blazing new trails in multiculturalism and diversity. On Wednesday, the City Council voted unanimously (with two members not voting) to grant preliminary approval to the Islamic call to prayer being broadcast over loudspeakers in the city. This followed the swearing-in earlier this month, on the Qur’an, of course, of Paterson’s new police chief, Ibrahim “Mike” Baycora, the first Muslim police chief in an American city. READ MORE

Iranian MP Says Government is Concealing ‘Horrific Numbers’ of Coronavirus Deaths: ‘It’s Not As If We Can Hide the Cemeteries’
by Zachary Evans
February 28, 2020

An Iranian member of Parliament on Friday said cases of the Wuhan coronavirus in the country were much more widespread than officials have reported. “I say this explicitly, the statistics presented so far are not true,” MP Gholamali Jafarzadeh Imenabadi told Al-Arabiya, a Saudi news network, adding that the “horrific numbers” of deaths have been recorded by cemeteries in Imenabadi’s city of Rasht, in northern Iran. “I have statistics about the number of deaths due to coronavirus from three different cemeteries in Rasht and I have to say that the numbers are much higher than what is being said,” Imenabadi added. “It is not as if we can hide the cemeteries.” READ MORE

RADIO FARDA Canadian Researchers Say 18,000 People Might Be Infected With Coronavirus In Iran A group of University of Toronto scientists and doctors have published an article offering an estimate that based on Coronavirus cases traveling from Iran to other countries it is statistically possible that 18,000 people are infected in the county. Researchers focused on volume of travel from Iran to other countries and proven cases of infected people arriving in other countries, such as Lebanon and Canada.

BLOOMBERG Coronavirus Will Hammer Iran’s Economy The contagion has done what American economic sanctions could not: shut down non-oil exports.  In the early days of the outbreak, officials seemed mainly concerned about public diplomacy with China. Keen to preserve the bilateral trade relationship, they kept up flights to China when other countries were cancelling them.

I24NEWS
Among Jewish Americans, Sanders to defeat Trump by considerable margin, poll shows
February 28, 2020

The Vermont progressive remains a divisive figure but enjoys strong support among younger Jewish voters. Democratic presidential frontrunner Bernie Sanders is set to crush US President Donald Trump among Americans of Jewish heritage should the two face off in November’s election, a poll showed. According to the non-partisan Jewish Electorate Institute (JEI), a majority of Jewish voters identify as Democrats and strongly disapprove of Trump’s policies and performance. READ MORE

DAILY BEAST Bernie Sanders Could Be the First Jewish Nominee—and Get Fewer Jewish Votes Than Hillary Clinton Americans Jews are liberal, but they’re not necessarily left-wing, and polls say they want a pro-Israel president. Can Sanders get their votes?

FRONT PAGE MAG An Imam at a Bernie Rally Had Called for the Destruction of Israel Also honor killings, sex slavery, and chopping off hands. When Imam Omar Suleiman appeared at a Bernie rally in Mesquite, TX, the hateful Islamist cleric spoke in front of a backdrop of giant American flags and signs urging donations to Sanders. Before Bernie took the stage, he called for an, “America where we uplift our most vulnerable, celebrate our diversity.” The Imam did not mention, as he has before, that he believes that, “Zionists are the enemies of God.”

Benny Gantz: “Does not inspire confidence that he has the finesse to navigate a political minefield in which we would need to engage not only with Trump but also Putin, the UK, Asia, the EU, and moderate Sunni states”

ISRAEL HAYOM (by agreement with JNS)
Time to put egos aside
by Isi Leibler
February 27, 2020

We should pinch ourselves to be certain that our current position is not a dream: The US administration is promoting Israel’s narrative and exposing Palestinian lies. Its peace plan rejects previously demanded concessions that would have led to the Jewish state’s demise; Iran faces massive global sanctions; Russian President Putin, despite ties with Syria and Iran, cooperates with Israel and recognizes its security needs, and Israel has unprecedented links with India, China, and many other countries around the world. Moreover, moderate Sunni neighbors have open or covert relations with Israel; Israel has become a major exporter of energy and water desalination systems; Israel’s defense forces can, if necessary, defeat all our adversaries combined, and Israel’s resilient economy is enjoying historically low unemployment and sustained growth. “A core principle of the Trump plan is that “everyone stays in place” – a reality that Palestinians must eventually come to accept”

MIDDLE EAST FORUM RADIO
Martin Kramer: The Trump Plan Will Be “Transformative” for Palestinians
by Marilyn Stern
Middle East Forum Radio
February 28, 2020

“Much of the responsibility for the predicament of the Palestinians today relies not just on them, but on their … supposed friends who … promised they would deliver to them on fantasies which were completely detached from reality.”…Until now, “the world has told them again and again that history could be reversed,” he explained. “When people stop telling Palestinians that history can be reversed, that is the beginning of wisdom. It begins with the United States, [and] will percolate to other states in the West, and [to the] Arabs. The Palestinians will begin to understand that their demand for a reverse of history has no support from anyone else.” READ MORE

AIPAC2020: An ArchitectGuy reader responds to a misleading “Times of Israel” story

Shame on ERIC CORTELLESSA for his imbalanced, utterly misleading reporting on AIPAC — and shame on the Times of Israel for not demanding higher journalistic standards. Eric’s most recent offense is the article entitled “Democrats Buttigieg, Klobuchar latest to skip AIPAC conference.” Like other news organizations, Eric correctly reported that Pete and Amy will not speak at this year’s AIPAC conference. But other reporters also informed their readers about the timing of Super Tuesday, on which the political lives of Pete and Amy depend.

You’d think Eric might have mentioned Super Tuesday. It’s kind of important. You also might wonder why Eric failed to ask the campaigns for a statement to confirm or deny an intent to boycott AIPAC. Or whether Amy’s staff will meet with AIPAC delegates on Tuesday. And you might like to know whether AIPAC has anything to say about this issue, assuming Eric’s contacts at “IfNotNow” are not the only spokespeople with relevant views.

Sadly, whenever we read an article by Eric about AIPAC, we find we need to play the “What’s Missing?” game. And, unfortunately, key facts and context are invariably missing from Eric’s AIPAC stories. This reflects (a) laziness, (b) unprofessionalism, (c) a willful desire to mislead, or (d) all of the above.

“The UNHRC has condemned Israel more than all other nations of the world combined. Now, a motley crew of rights violators seeks to harm Israelis and Palestinians alike”

JNS
The UN Human Rights Council strikes again
by Clifford May
February 23, 2020

What do Eritrea, Mauritania, Somalia, Qatar, Pakistan, Libya and Venezuela have in common? Answer: All are lands ruled by chronic violators of basic human rights. And, oh yes, all are members of the U.N. Human Rights Council. This is no mere coincidence. Members of the UNHRC need not worry about being criticized by the UNHRC. Membership has an additional privilege: A license to slander Israel, the only state in the Middle East that actually guarantees rights to its citizens—Jews, Arabs, Muslims, Christians and Druze alike. The UNHRC has condemned Israel more than all other nations of the world combined. It has passed not a single resolution condemning China, Russia, Cuba or Zimbabwe. READ MORE
