AAUP: “Campus free-speech legislation is one piece of a much larger well-funded, right-wing effort to disempower public higher education in the United States”

CAMPUS REFORM
AAUP calls campus free speech bills a ‘right-wing’ conspiracy
by Toni Airaksinen
July 10, 2018

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is urging its thousands of members to challenge campus free speech legislation, which it calls “problematic” and “unnecessary.”…While bills to support free speech vary by state, the AAUP worries that common features include forbidding the cancellation of controversial speakers and requiring schools to educate students on First Amendment rights during orientation…For students who shout down speakers or otherwise prevent them from talking, the new legislation is “problematic because it could have really devastating effects,” Owens warns, noting that students could be suspended or expelled for such behavior. “Obama concealed a myth-smashing report. Trump can reveal it to the world”

WALL STREET JOURNAL
Expose the Palestinian ‘Refugee’ Scam
by Richard Goldberg and Jonathan Schanzer
July 5, 2018

If President Trump wants to promote peace in the Middle East, his first step should be to declassify a key State Department report that would end the myth of Palestinian “refugees.” The United Nations Relief and Works Agency is singularly devoted to the Palestinian refugee issue. Unrwa labels more than five million Palestinians “refugees”—an impossible figure. The first Arab-Israeli war, in 1948, yielded roughly 800,000 Palestinian Arab refugees.. “The Palestinian national movement denies Israel’s legitimacy, and Israel in turn denies the Palestinians’ national sovereignty. A new book insists on accommodating both”

NATIONAL REVIEW
Both Sides Now: A Review of Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor
by Brian Stewart
July 7, 2018

…Yossi Klein Halevi is the author of the new book Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor. In it, he offers a heartfelt “invitation to a conversation” to a Palestinian neighbor whom he doesn’t yet know but must come to befriend. The alternative, in this conflict perpetuated by routine failures of leadership, is to remain mired in a “cycle of denial” whereby each side bitterly denies the legitimacy of the other. Halevi seems convinced that breaking the cycle may ultimately depend on the multiplication of such meager efforts…READ MORE

Claude Lanzmann, “Shoah” filmmaker “died Thursday at 92, railed against the ‘Polish lobby’ undercutting his groundbreaking Holocaust work that tarnished the narrative of Polish victimhood”

TIMES OF ISRAEL
Long before Israel, Claude Lanzmann stirred Poland’s wrath
by Marissa Newman
July 5, 2018

Claude Lanzmann was mostly amused by the “truckloads of calumny” unloaded across the front pages of the livid Polish press after the 1985 release of his nine-and-a-half hour landmark “Shoah” documentary…Lanzmann died on Thursday at the age of 92, some 33 years after he first cast his lens on many ordinary Poles, offering up some piercing accounts of horrific wartime actions and deeply rooted anti-Semitism, and violently upending narratives of untarnished Polish victimhood. His death came amid a renewed debate on the role of Poles during the HolocaustREAD MORE

#JewishVoiceForPeace has “gone academic with its first book, deceptively titled On Anti-Semitism”

THE TOWER
“The Jewish Voice for Palestine”: A Review of JVP’s “On Anti-Semitism”
by A.J. Caschetta
July 5, 2018

…The book’s subtitle, Solidarity and the Struggle for Justice, is as misleading as its title. The JVP isn’t really interested in justice; it just wants Israel supplanted by Palestine – the “one state” solution. The problem is, most of the authors aren’t honest enough to admit it…Any reader who manages to get through the entire volume will find three different kinds of authors. First are the scholars, who are responsible for the most effective pieces of propaganda. The celebrities bring the media attention that the JVP craves. And the “grass-roots activists” provide comic relief. READ MORE

“Critics say the joint Polish-Israeli agreement downplays the role of many Poles who willingly cooperated with the Nazis”

ARUTZ SHEVA
Bennett: Joint statement with Poland a disgrace
by Shlomo Pyutrikovsky
July 7, 2018

Education Minister Naftali Bennett on Thursday referred to the joint statement by the prime minister and Polish prime minister about the Polish role the Holocaust…Bennett noted, “The joint statement by the Prime Minister of Israel and the Prime Minister of Poland regarding the responsibility of Poles in the Holocaust is disgraceful, full of lies and distortions, and it desecrates the memory of many Jews murdered by Poles.” “The statement describes a so-called systematic action by the Polish government-in-exile and the Polish undergrounds for help and assistance to the Jewish people, which is not compatible with reality” he said. Dershowitz shunned on Martha’s Vineyard

THE HILL
Maxine Waters does not speak for Democrats or liberals
by Alan Dershowitz
June 27, 2018

…Waters does not speak for all Democrats or liberals. Nor do those who threw Sarah Huckabee Sanders out of the Red Hen restaurant. Neither do those who have harassed other members of the Trump administration. But these rude extremists are a symptom of the times. The divisions have gotten so bad that many on both sides refuse to speak or listen to those on the other side. Either you are for Trump or against him, and that is all some people need to know to make judgments about you. I know this because I have experienced this firsthand on Martha’s Vineyard. READ MORE

TOWN HALL Dershowitz Slams Far Left: ‘I Won’t Let the Democrats Steal My Party From Me’ “For them, it is enough that what I have said about the Constitution might help Trump,” he wrote. “So they are shunning me and trying to ban me from their social life on Martha’s Vineyard. One of them, an academic at a distinguished university, has told people that he would not attend any dinner or party to which I was invited. He and others have demanded “trigger warnings” so that they can be assured of having “safe spaces” in which they will not encounter me or my ideas.

Conservative Radio Host Joe Walsh: Trump’s misbehavior is “met with tolerance or even sycophancy from the right, from the vice president to the House speaker to fellow media personalities”

WEEKLY STANDARD
Is Joe Walsh Really ‘Woke’?
by Chris Deaton
June 27, 2018

What makes Joe Walsh a unicorn on the right is that he roasts and praises Trump with equal intensity. He says he’s “not a Trumpist,” which is indisputable, accounting for such extra evidence as his opposition to the president’s trade policy and his doubt that Trump is much of a “tough guy” after the way he handled the North Korea summit…But Walsh is sure there’s no such ideology as Trumpism, anyway: “There ain’t a core idea in his body,” he says of the president.  “We got him because the Republican party…just f—ing sucks, the Democrat party f—ing sucks, our politics suck.” READ MORE

Iranian General: “Israel and another country in the region have joint teams which work to ensure clouds entering Iranian skies are unable to release rain”

TIMES OF ISRAEL
Iranian general blames water woes on Israeli ‘cloud theft’
by AFP and TOI Staff
July 2, 2018

An Iranian general on Monday accused Israel of manipulating weather to prevent rain over the Islamic Republic, alleging his country was facing cloud “theft,” before being contradicted by the nation’s weather chief. “The changing climate in Iran is suspect,” Brigadier General Gholam Reza Jalali, head of Iran’s Civil Defense Organization told a press conference, semi-official ISNA news agency reported…“On top of that, we are facing the issue of cloud and snow theft,” Jalali added, citing a survey showing that, above 2,200 meters (7,218 feet), all mountainous areas between Afghanistan and the Mediterranean are covered in snow, except Iran.
