Israeli professor attacked by Palestinian in Germany

A US-based Israeli professor of philosophy was assaulted Wednesday in Germany by a man of Palestinian origin, who knocked his skullcap off and shouted at him that there should be no Jews in Germany. The Israeli defended himself but was then set upon and hit in the face by police, who thought he was the instigator of the altercation. The local chief of police later apologized for the incident. The 50-year-old professor from the University of Baltimore, who was not identified in reports, was visiting the city of Bonn as a guest lecturer. READ MORE

Can American and Israeli Jews Stay Together as One People?
by Natan Sharansky and Gil Troy

And yet, the survey also testified to something else: 66 percent of American Jews and 78 percent of Israelis describe each other as “siblings,” “first cousins,” or “extended family.” What is more, they assert a sense of common destiny: roughly three-quarters of American and Israeli Jews see the success of both communities as vital to Jewish survival. Here, then, is an up-to-date snapshot of the Jewish people: clashing frequently, arguing intensely, but for the most part unwilling to call it quits. READ MORE

ADL attack on Kavanaugh nomination “latest instance of how Jonathan Greenblatt has turned the venerable anti-Semitism watchdog into a partisan outfit”

Whatever happened to the ADL?
by Jonathan Tobin
July 13, 2018

When Jonathan Greenblatt replaced Abe Foxman as national director of the Anti-Defamation League in 2015, the shift from a career Jewish professional to a veteran Democratic Party operative with no experience working in the field raised questions about the future direction of the group…But after three years at the helm of the ADL, there’s no longer any doubt that not only is Foxman badly missed, his replacement has more or less destroyed the organization’s reputation. By repeatedly involving it in political controversies, it is impossible to pretend that Greenblatt’s vision of the group isn’t fundamentally that of a Democratic Party auxiliaryREAD MORE

Israel’s First Moon Mission Is Planned and a SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Will Take It
by Lucas Laursen
July 11, 2018

A group of private Israeli companies are joining the race to return to the moon, after NASA’s recent cancellation of a lunar mission and India’s announcement that in October it will send a rover to look for signs of water and nuclear fuel. Israeli nonprofit SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries will launch its mission to the Moon by the end of this year, they announced yesterday. SpaceIL was one of five finalists that failed to claim any part of the Google Lunar X Prize, a $30 million twenty-first century space race to send the first private mission to the Moon. READ MORE

Jewish Democrats contend with a wave of progressives who criticize Israel
by Charles Dunst
July 10, 2018

…The [Bernie] Sanders effect According to a Pew Research Center survey, the percentage of Democrats saying they sympathize more with Israel than the Palestinians has declined from 38 percent in 2001 to 27 percent in 2018 — the lowest level of support on record. Support for Israel further decreased among self-identified “liberal” Democrats from 48 percent in 2001 to 19 percent in 2018. In the same time period, their support for Palestinians rose from 18 percent to 35 percent…Some credit Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., with normalizing such criticism of Israel. READ MORE

Syrians flee towards hospitals of the ‘enemy’
by Fiamma Nirenstein
July 9, 2018

The strong winds in the Golan Heights blow pain and come from tent cities in which displaced Syrians are clustered together a few meters from the steel-and-barbed-wire fence with Israel…And so, the theme that currently besets the world—that of refugees knocking at Israel’s door—is being played out towards refugees who until just the other day have been enemies. Desperate people are turning up now amid the oak trees of the Golan to request help from their long-standing enemy. READ MORE

Hamas terror “casts a serious doubt on the viability of the Oslo paradigm of a unified Palestinian entity in the West Bank and Gaza”

MIDDLE EAST FORUM
Israel’s Gaza Policy
with Maj. Gen. (res.) Gershon Hacohen
July 3, 2018.

The transformation of the Gaza Strip into an ineradicable terror entity poses a formidable security threat to Israel by placing its population centers and strategic infrastructure within the range of Hamas’s rockets and missiles all the way to Tel Aviv, and by allowing the group to breach the border fence and infiltrate Israel via its extensive network of underground tunnels. Should the IDF need to enter Gaza in a future war, Hamas has the ability to exact a heavy toll through its well-organized defensive positions in the cities and refugee camps. READ MORE

How Sheldon Adelson just might be turning the tide against BDS on US campuses
by David Horovitz
July 8, 2018

In the academic year that just ended, Sheldon Adelson’s Maccabee Task Force, set up to battle anti-Israel activism on US campuses, focused on 40 of what it assessed were the schools most hostile to Israel and most intimidating to pro-Israel students…[Director David] Brog visited Israel late last month to attend a conference organized by the Ministry of Strategic Affairs that focused on tackling BDS and other Israel-delegitimization movements…While Israel appears to be flailing in its anti-BDS efforts…the Maccabee Task Force, funded by Adelson to the tune of tens of millions of dollars — would appear to be doing rather well in its mission.
