Citizenship Law gets second chance as Knesset passes first reading

The Citizenship and Entry into Israel Law has a new lease on life, passing its first reading in the Knesset on Feb. 7, the start of a lengthy legislative process. The law, which essentially prevents Palestinians from “marrying into Israel,” went down to defeat during a passionate debate in July, but has been resuscitated as center-right Knesset members from both sides of the aisle consider it essential for Israel’s security and demographic stability.  The Citizenship Law—also referred to more colloquially as the “family reunification law,” first passed in 2003 and renewed subsequently each year—is designed to stem the flow of Palestinians entering Israel through marriage, usually to Arab Israelis, after which they are eligible for Israeli citizenship or permanent residency. As far as Jessie Sander is concerned, she’s being persecuted for her “political beliefs.” She was hired by the Westchester (New York) Reform Temple last July but was fired 15 days later after the synagogue leadership was made aware of a blog post she co-authored a few months earlier when the Hamas terrorist group was raining down hundreds of rockets and missiles on Israeli towns and cities. Titled “israel [sic] Won’t Save Us: Moving Toward Liberation,” it contained a litany of lies and libels directed at the Jewish state, whose name the bloggers refused to capitalize.It spoke of the duty of “white American Jews” to support Palestinian liberation and rejected the right of the 7 million Jews of Israel to self-determination in their ancient homeland as “racism.” READ MORE

One way of understanding the 2009-2014 Obama Administration policy of “reset” with Vladimir Putin’s Russia is to recall two iconic incidents. The first was the 2009 “reset.” Newly appointed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that she would pursue a “reset” detente with Russia. America would relax the prior Bush Administration’s mild ostracism of Russia after its 2008 invasion of Georgia and softly start anew. Israel will surround itself with a defensive “laser wall,” with new missile interception technology to be ready within a year, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced in a speech at the Institute for National Security Studies…The IDF will begin using the laser interception system in the next year, first experimentally and later operationally, starting in the South. “This will allow us, in the medium- to long-term, to surround Israel with a laser wall that will defend us from missiles, rockets, UAVs and other threats that will essentially take away the strongest card our enemies have against us,” Bennett said. Perhaps you thought Israel had long ago established its right to exist as a Jewish state. Guess again. Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran want to eliminate Israel as we know it, but who would have thought they’d find allies in Amnesty International? Perhaps we should have known this given some of Amnesty’s sympathies with the global left. But the nonprofit advocate for political prisoners is going far beyond that with its 211-page report labeling Israel an “apartheid” state that deserves the world’s opprobrium and sanction. The report is embargoed until Tuesday, but we’ve obtained the draft from a source other than Amnesty. It deserves condemnation for its bias and lack of understanding about why Israel survives amid hostile neighbors. READ MORE

So it’s only fitting that in its latest report alleging Israel is an apartheid and illegitimate state, the very first line is a blatant and malicious lie, a quotation from Benjamin Netanyahu mangled so that it seems to support such charges.

Marie Newman, a Chicago-area Democrat, is under investigation by the Office of Congressional Ethics for allegedly promising Iymen Chehade, a Palestinian-American academic, a job on her congressional staff if he agreed not to run against her in a primary. An editorial published in the Kuwaiti daily Arab Times this weekend to a somewhat surprising position when it called for the Gulf states to normalize relations with Israel while describing the Palestinians as “insulters” who “curse the Gulf leaders and people” and “use all of the defamatory and abusive words in their dictionary against us.” The editorial, penned by Arab Times Editor-in-Chief Ahmed al-Jarallah, lamented that despite being the targets of Palestinian “insults and curses,” the Gulf countries “overlook all that by sending them aid.” Al-Jarallah also slammed the Palestinian leadership for supporting authoritarian leaders such as the late Saddam Hussein, Gamal Abdel Nasser, and Moammar Gadhafi, as well as Iran’s Revolutionary commander Qasem Soleimani… READ MORE
