As the mother of the modern-day Progressive movement, it would make sense for Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) to take her young Democratic colleague Rep. Ilhan Omar under her maternal wing in loco parentis. Defending Omar against accusations of anti-Semitism last week on MSNBC, Schakowsky explained that as a refugee from Somalia, Omar “comes from a different culture. She has things to learn.” Rather than acknowledge that Omar is a bigot, Schakowsky thus invokes the doctrine of unconditional love. But Omar is not “just off the boat.” She came to the United States in the 1990s, according to her official House website. READ MORE

For the first time ever, the U.S. State Department dropped the term “occupied territories” from its headline referring to the Golan Heights, Judea, Samaria and Gaza in its annual global human rights report, released Wednesday by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In the report for year-ending 2018, the description of the Golan Heights, the text was changed from “Israel-occupied” to “Israeli-controlled.” The text in the separate section on the “West Bank and Gaza Strip” – territory captured by Israel during the 1967 Six Day War along with the Golan Heights – also did not refer to those regions as “occupied,” or being “under occupation.” READ MORE

Amnesty International has condemned the sentencing of prominent Iranian human rights lawyer and women’s rights defender Nasrin Sotoudeh, calling it “outrageous injustice”. Sotoudeh, who has been in Tehran’s Evin prison since last June, was sentenced to 148 lashes and 33 years in prison on Monday. The reaction to the latest example of anti-Semitic invective from Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is a teaching moment for anyone previously unsure about how the toxic mix of identity politics, intersectional ideology, and naked partisanship could lead to a major American political party deciding that hate- mongering from one of its members wasn’t deserving even of a slap on the wrist.
