2000 year old stone column inscribed “Yerushalayim” has been discovered

This Is the Oldest Known Inscription Bearing the Full Name of Jerusalem
by Laura Geggel
October 9, 2018

Archaeologists have uncovered the oldest known instance of the word “Jerusalem” spelled out in full, on an ancient stone carving that was once part of an ancient pottery workshop, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, announced today (Oct. 9). On earlier inscriptions, Jerusalem was spelled “Yerushalem” or “Shalem,” rather than “Yerushalayim” (pronounced Yeh-roo-sha-La-yeem), as it is spelled in Hebrew today. The carving — which was written in Aramaic and says “Hananiah son of Dodalos from Jerusalem” — dates to the first century A.D., making it about 2,000 years old, according to the IAA. Strategic Affairs Minister #GiladErdan: US student must repudiate BDS to gain entry to Israel

Hebrew U. head backs detained US student, warns case harms anti-BDS effort
by Staff and AP

The Hebrew University on Tuesday threw its support behind a US student of Palestinian descent, who has been held at Ben Gurion Airport for a week and faces deportation for allegedly supporting an Israel boycott. Lara Alqasem, 22, who has Palestinian grandparents, was prevented from entering the country after arriving at Ben Gurion Airport last Tuesday, despite having received a student visa from the Israeli Consulate in Miami to study in a masters program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She has been held in a airport detention facility ever since while she appeals to be let in, arguing that she does not support a boycott of Israel. READ MORE

New York Times takes note of increasing numbers of Democrats abandoning Israel

NEW YORK TIMES
A New Wave of Democrats Tests the Party’s Blanket Support for Israel
by Catie Edmondson
Oct. 7, 2018

A [not insubstantial] cluster of activist Democrats — most of them young, most of them cruising toward House seats this fall — has dared to breach what has been an almost inviolable orthodoxy in both political parties, strong support for Israel, raising the specter of a crack in the Democratic Party that Republicans could use to attract Jewish supporters….Pro-Israel groups like StandWithUs are concerned that [Democrat’s] anti-Israel views, promoted and masked by “human rights language,” will find “a landing space in our political system,” said Peggy Shapiro, the group’s Midwest executive director. Barkan terror attack attempts to ‘sabotage the normalization’ of local Jews and Arabs
by Josh Hasten
October 8, 2018

Just as shocking as the execution-style murders of Kim Levengrond Yehezkel, a 29-year-old mother of an infant, and Ziv Hajbi, a 35-year-old father of three from Rishon Letzion, was the location of the vicious attack: the Barkan Industrial Park in Samaria, with its mix of Israel and Palestinian employees. The Israel Defense Forces and other security personnel remain in pursuit of the terrorist, identified as 23-year-old Ashraf Walid Suleiman Na’alwa from the West Bank village of Shuweika, just north of Tulkarm. Levengrond Yehezkel was laid to rest on Sunday night in her hometown of Rosh Ha’ayin. READ MORE

“Governments around the world are quietly turning to YAMAM, Israel’s special police force, for help with their most intractable security problems”

VANITY FAIR
“We Try to Learn Every Terrorist Attack”: Inside the Top-Secret Israeli Anti-Terrorism Operation That’s Changing the Game
by Adam Ciralsky
November 2018

On a spring evening in late April, I traveled to a fortified compound in the Ayalon Valley between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The location is not identified on Waze, the Israeli-built navigation tool, and so, as far as my app-addled cabdriver was concerned, it does not exist. Then again, the same could be said for its inhabitants: YAMAM, a band of counterterror operatives whose work over the last four decades has been shrouded in secrecy. YAMAM is the world’s most elite—and busiest—force of its kind, and its expertise is in high demand in an era when ISIS veterans strike outside their remaining Middle East strongholds and self-radicalized lone wolves emerge to attack Western targets. “Until about 15 years ago, spinal surgery was a lot like grasping in the dark”

Eye on the Spine

Medtronic, an Irish-American medical device company, announced last Friday that it was purchasing Israel’s Mazor Robotics for a hefty $1.64 billion, the biggest exit ever for an Israeli biotech company. Mazor’s signature piece of technology, a robotic-assisted procedure, represents the future gold standard of spine surgery, which is now poised to be executed globally. Israeli innovations are improving the lives of millions of Americans and other people around the world, and this technology’s proven track record should encourage more American hospitals to adopt it. “It is clear why those groups that support the destruction of the State of Israel are afraid of Canary Mission”

Canary Mission Protects Jews. It Should Be Thanked, Not Criticized
by Yisrael Rosenberg
October 5, 2018

A recent exposé in these pages disclosed that Canary Mission, a website that collects the anti-Semitic and anti-Israel statement of activists, received funding from the San Francisco Jewish Federation. The Federation was forced by the report to promise that it would no longer fund Canary Mission. This is a mistake. Canary Mission provides a huge public service, operating as an early-warning alarm system for the safety and well-being of American Jewry. READ MORE

“ACLU’s ‘reinvention in the Trump era'”

ACLU’s Opposition to Kavanaugh Sounds Its Death Knell
by Alan M. Dershowitz
October 6, 2018

So why did the American Civil Liberties Union oppose a Republican nominee to the Supreme Court and argue for a presumption of guilt regarding sexual allegations directed against that judicial nominee? The answer is as clear as it is simple. It is all about pleasing the donors. The ACLU used to be cash poor but principle-rich. Now, ironically, after Trump taking office, the ACLU has never become so cash-rich, yet principle-poor…The problem is that most of the money is not coming from civil libertarians who care about free speech, due process, the rights of the accused and defending the unpopular….READ MORE

#Corbyn: “A disturbing glimpse at the U.K. Labor Party’s leader — and his dark Jew-hating world”

JERUSALEM POST
Oren extends ‘invitation’ for British Jews to make Aliyah if Corbyn elected
by Jeremy Sharon
October 4, 2018

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office MK Michael Oren (Kulanu) has called for Israel to prepare “the warmest invitation” for British Jews to make aliyah, including various state-backed incentives, should UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn win a general election and become prime minister. Oren described Corbyn as being extremely hostile to Israel, and said that his election would create an even worse atmosphere in the UK for Britain’s 270,000 Jews…A poll conducted for the UK’s Jewish Chronicle last month showed that 40 percent of British Jews would consider emigrating should Corbyn become prime minister.
