The US and the #Holocaust: “Public opinion was not in charge of US immigration policy; President Roosevelt was”

PBS Holocaust documentary perpetuates well-worn myths to glorify FDR, says historian
Matt Lebovic
September 18, 2022

Early in his new film “The U.S. and the Holocaust,” documentarian Ken Burns claims the United States admitted more Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany than any other country on Earth. The problem with this statement, according to historian Rafael Medoff, is that it flies in the face of publicly available data on refugees from that period. Clocking in at six hours, “The U.S. and the Holocaust” begins airing on PBS this week. In recent press interviews, Burns said he attempted to handle Roosevelt “more critically” for “The U.S. and the Holocaust,” compared to the previous, somewhat glowing treatments of FDR in his other documentaries on the period. NEW YORK POST Ken Burns compares sending migrants to Martha’s Vineyard to rise of Nazis Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns has sparked outrage by comparing the relocation of border crossers to idyllic Martha’s Vineyard to the rise of Nazi Germany before the horrors of the Holocaust. The Brooklyn-born, longtime Democratic donor made the direct comparison Thursday while appearing on CNN to promote his new film, “The US and the Holocaust.”

Ben & Jerry’s founders accuse parent company of blocking social mission

The co-founders of Ben & Jerry’s have accused its parent company, Unilever, of infringing on the ice cream company’s rights to control its social mission. The accusation by ice cream tycoons Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield comes amid a lawsuit against Unilever filed by Ben & Jerry’s after Unilever sold the Israeli branch of the popular ice cream maker to a local licensee in June when the company decided not to sell its frozen treats in the West Bank. “Unilever has usurped their authority and reversed a decision that was made. And we can’t allow that to happen,” Cohen told MSNBC on Sunday, his first comment about the issue since the lawsuit was filed. READ MORE

Disney to roll out Israeli superhero in ‘Captain America’ film — irking Arabs
Ariel Zilber
September 14, 2022

The Walt Disney Company is planning to introduce an Israeli comic book superhero in Marvel’s next installment of its “Captain America” film franchise — prompting worry among Arabs that it will reinforce negative stereotypes to a mass audience. Sabra, also known as Ruth Bat-Seraph, is a fictional “human mutant” superheroine who moonlights as a Mossad agent and a police officer. She possesses great strength and stamina. The character, whose costume includes the blue Star of David that is emblazoned on Israel’s national flag, has made occasional cameos in comic book versions of the “Incredible Hulk” as well as the “Amazing Spider-Man” and “X-Men.” READ MORE

Survey shows that labeling Jews as #Islamophobes is extreme #gaslighting

ELDER OF ZIYON
Survey: US Jews are not Islamophobic – but 26% of Muslims themselves are!
September 16, 2022

The Institute for Social Policy and Understanding has released its 2022 survey on Muslims in America. The survey shows that Jews are the one faith group that is most tolerant towards Muslims. Even more than Muslims themselves! The Discrimination and Islamophobia section of the survey shows that in their Islamophobia Index, which averages to responses for several questions about Muslims, Jews were by far the most tolerant – and Muslims looked at themselves in a worse light than the average American does. 17% of Jews were considered Islamophobic according to this index, while 25% of the general public did – and 26% of Muslims themselves. This came from rabbinical interpretation, not the Bible: Moses never wore tefillin, nor did he place a mezuzah on his tent. King David and his son Solomon never wore yarmulkes, nor did any king of Israel. Even the kosher laws and how circumcision must be performed are not biblical”

Yom Kippur is not a Biblical Holiday
Israel Drazin
September 19, 2022

As with Rosh Hashanah, Orthodox Jews like me recognize that Yom Kippur is not mentioned in the Bible. It replaces another day known as Yom Hakippurim, mentioned in the Bible in Leviticus 16:29–31, 23:27–32, and Numbers 29:7–11. Orthodox Jews follow the Oral Law, the ways that the rabbis interpreted the Torah. This can be called Rabbinical Judaism in contrast to Biblical Judaism. The rabbinical interpretations of the Torah resulted in many changes. Some examples are: The rabbis delineated 39 types of behaviors that are prohibited on Shabbat. They are not in the Torah. Lapid’s support for a Palestinian state compounds a disastrous error

JNS
The real reason for the war against Israel and the West
Melanie Phillips
September 22, 2022

As soon as it emerged that Israel’s acting Prime Minister Yair Lapid would tell the United Nations General Assembly this week that he supports the establishment of a Palestinian state, he was engulfed by outrage, incredulity and dismay. Critics charged that he was endangering Israel’s security by seeking to establish a terrorist state on land to which Israel is lawfully entitled. This, they said, would incentivize yet more Palestinian terrorism…This was the first time in many years that an Israeli leader expressed support for such a state at the U.N.—and at a time when Palestinian radicalization and terror attacks are increasing. Of course, Lapid’s initiative has gone down well with the left, which believes the Arab-Israeli conflict is a dispute over territorial boundaries fueled by the supposedly extremist Jewish belief in a biblical entitlement to the Land of Israel. Hundreds of mourners arrived at a military cemetery in Netanyahu Wednesday evening to pay their respects to Maj. You said, ‘nothing will happen to me, my beautiful. Who can do anything to me?’ But my biggest nightmare happened.” READ MORE

Nides: Biden administration taking Abraham Accords ‘from start-up to real operation’
Jacob Magid
September 15, 2022

In the early days of the Biden administration, there appeared to be some reluctance in Washington to embrace the Abraham Accords. Biden officials acknowledged that the Trump-brokered normalization agreements Israel signed with the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco in 2020 were positive developments for the region, but took little public action to advance the initiative in early 2021. Some senior US officials intentionally referred to them only as “normalization agreements,” rather than using the term coined by the previous administration…At his Senate confirmation hearing last September, Nides made a point of demonstrating his support for the initiative regardless of its origins. “The Abraham Accords — yes, the Abraham Accords — are critical to the region’s stability and prosperity,” he said then. “Al Qaeda once again has a safe haven in Afghanistan, endangering Americans”

FOREIGN POLICY
On 9/11 Anniversary, End the Self-Delusion About America’s Enemies
H. R. McMaster and Bradley Bowman
September 9, 2022

To understand the persistent malady of self-delusion in Washington, consider U.S. President Joe Biden’s comments in August 2021. “What interest do we have in Afghanistan at this point with al Qaeda gone?” he asked in an effort to justify his decision to withdraw every U.S. service member from Afghanistan. “We went to Afghanistan for the express purpose of getting rid of al Qaeda in Afghanistan. … And we did.” The problem with such statements is that they were clearly not accurate, as many warned early last year and as the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ Long War Journal has documented for many years. The Taliban gave al Qaeda a safe haven to plan 9/11, and the two groups have remained attached at the hip ever since. Indeed, no less than a United Nations monitoring team reiterated in an April 2021 assessment that “the Taliban and Al-Qaida remain closely aligned and show no indication of breaking ties.” You know there is a problem when a U.N. entity has a clearer view of the United States’ enemies than the White House. Ken Burns’ PBS documentary ‘The U.S. And The Holocaust’ asks hard questions about how Americans treated Jews and immigrants during wartime
Andrew Lapin
September 2, 2022

One of the first people introduced in Ken Burns’ new documentary series about the Holocaust is Otto, a Jewish man seen in the series’ first episode who tries to secure passage to America for his family but gets stymied by the country’s fierce anti-immigration legislation. It isn’t until the third episode that viewers learn that Otto’s daughter is nicknamed Anne, and the pieces fall into place: He’s the father of Anne Frank, the Holocaust’s most famous victim. Burns calls the delayed detail a “hidden ball trick,” hoping that an audience with only passing knowledge of the Frank family will not immediately clue into the fact that Otto was Anne’s father.
