Singer Lana Del Rey has canceled her planned performance at an Israeli music festival after pressure from Palestinian boycott activists. It was the second time in four years the American pop star has canceled a concert in Israel. In a Twitter message late Friday, Del Rey said she was postponing the performance “until a time when I can schedule visits for both my Israeli and Palestinian fans.” The decision sparked anger among many of her Israeli fans over the weekend. It was not clear whether the cancellation was a direct result of calls by anti-Israel boycott, divestment and sanctions [BDS] movement on the singer not to perform in Israel. READ MORE

The courageous Vanessa Redgrave felt the need to call out those “Zionist hoodlums”

Vanessa Redgrave: Still hating after all these years
by Ben Cohen
August 31, 2018

…In 1978, Redgrave won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in “Julia,” a searing drama about resistance to the Nazis during the Second World War…During her acceptance speech, Redgrave saluted the audience for having “refused to be intimidated by the threat of a small bunch of Zionist hoodlums, whose behavior is an insult to the stature of Jews all over the world, and to their great and heroic record of struggle against fascism and oppression.”…In subsequent years, Redgrave was to claim that her statement had cost her several starring roles—an intimation that “Zionist hoodlums” were also running movie studios. She never expressed regret.” READ MORE

After defunding UNRWA, “Trump Administration will allow Gulf and Arab allies to help keep UN’s Palestinian refugee agency afloat for now, but ultimately wants it dismantled, Israeli TV reports”

WASHINGTON POST
US ends funding of UN agency for Palestinian refugees
by Susannah George
September 1, 2018

The United States is ending its decades of funding for the U.N. agency that helps Palestinian refugees, the State Department announced Friday, a week after slashing bilateral U.S. aid for projects in the West Bank and Gaza. The U.S. supplies nearly 30 percent of the total budget of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA, and had been demanding reforms in the way it is run. The department said in a written statement that the United States “will no longer commit further funding to this irredeemably flawed operation.” The decision cuts nearly $300 million of planned support. TIMES OF ISRAEL After defunding UNRWA, US said seeking to limit others’ aid to it, then close it A day after the US announced it will not give any further funding to UNWRA, the UN agency that aids Palestinian refugees, Israeli officials said the Trump Administration has made clear to them that it intends to see UNRWA closed down altogether and all its functions taken over by other agencies.

JNS UNRWA lobbyists: Israel and Saudia Arabia keep it afloat as US funds dry up There is concern that if UNRWA is unable to help hundreds of thousands of needy Palestinians due to budget cuts, Israel will see rioting, an escalation in violence and terrorist attacks.

“It was Neil Simon who would bring the Jewish experience to the rarified spaces of Broadway in a new and profound way”

THE FEDERALIST
How Neil Simon Helped Make Jews In America White
by David Marcus
August 30, 2018

…There are many tributes to Simon celebrating a myriad of his plays, but I’d like to focus on the three I think are most important — his three most autobiographical plays. “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” “Biloxi Blues,” and “Broadway Bound” are the stories of Jewish acceptance in America…It is “Broadway Bound” that most fully explores the fundamental way in which Jews came to be white, a process that always involves a two way street of assimilation and contribution. Arguably the biggest contribution made by Jews in America was in the field of entertainment, specifically comedy. READ MORE

ARIZONA JEWISH POST Prolific and uninhibited, Neil Simon got us right. That’s what geniuses do. He was the Michael Jordan of Broadway — with all quirks, critics, and limitations that come with. But his achievement was singular, and the way he re-shaped the game and the art form and business of theater — is total. We’ll not see his like again.

Norway’s Jew- and Israel-obsession harkens back to WW2 Prime Minister Quisling who helped the Nazis murder Norwegian Jews

NEWSMAX
Why Did Nearly 40 Percent of Norwegians Compare Israelis to Nazis?
by Abraham Cooper and Manfred Gerstenfeld
August 29, 2018

Not long ago, a poll taken in Norway showed that 38 percent of Norwegians actually believe Israel treats the Palestinians like the Nazis treated Jews. Around the same time, the Oslo municipality published a study on harassment of children in Oslo high schools. It found that one-third of Jewish high school students were harassed verbally or physically at least twice a month. In any culture, the tone comes from the top — and Norway’s festering zeitgeist of anti-Semitism proves this point. A few weeks ago, former Norwegian Foreign Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, unleashed another one of his hate salvos against the Jewish state. SodaStream BDS takeaway: “In this topsy-turvy world if you’d like to see Palestinians living in peace, gainfully employed, with access to quality medical care, and reason to believe tomorrow will be brighter than today, you’re denounced as anti-Palestinian”

…The news of PepsiCo’s purchase of SodaStream makes one thing abundantly clear: While the BDS campaign managed to deprive Palestinians of good jobs, it failed to prevent the company that had provided those jobs from becoming an enormous international success. Also significant is the fact that PepsiCo is the buyer: Years ago, it was one of the companies complying with the Arab League boycott against Israel. Omar Barghouti, a co-founder of the BDS campaign, is livid.  He issued a statement declaring that the PepsiCo purchase notwithstanding, SodaStream “is still subject to boycott” READ MORE

The Problem of Anti-Semitic Leftist Jewish Power
by Daniel Greenfield
August 29, 2018

The Forward is full of critical headlines about “Jewish Power,” from “New Film Reveals The Perils of Jewish Power,” to “The Burdens of Jewish Power” and “How the Jews Are Tarnished by Money.” …[Karl] Marx saw Judaism as the embodiment of Jewish self-interest. For the latter-day left, for whom Judaism doesn’t exist, Israel is Marx’s embodiment of Jewish clannish power. Like Marx, the anti-Israel left is convinced that Israel corrupts and controls America. Even, echoing the old leftist anti-Semite, that America is becoming like Israel. Destroying Israel will liberate Jews from their selfish Jewishness. READ MORE

“If gender activists prevail, they will be left with a world they neither recognize nor like very much”

WALL STREET JOURNAL
The Transgender Language War
by Abigail Shrier
August 29, 2018

If you want to control people’s thoughts, begin by commandeering their words. Taking this Orwellian lesson to heart, Virginia’s Fairfax County public school system recently stripped the phrase “biological gender” from its family life curriculum, replacing it with “sex assigned at birth.” Without permitting parents to opt out, public schools across the country are teaching children that “gender” is neither binary nor biological. It’s closer to a mental state: a question of how girllike or boylike you feel. Students will fall anywhere along a gender spectrum, according to these educators. READ MORE SUBSCRIPTION CONTENT

Pro-Israel donor Adam Milstein denies funding Canary Mission

Real-estate investor Adam Milstein denied a report that he is a funder of Canary Mission, an anonymous website that aims to name and shame anti-Israel activists. Milstein’s charity, the Adam and Gila Milstein Family Foundation, donates to a number of groups that work on campus from a pro-Israel perspective, including Students Supporting Israel, the Amcha Initiative and the media watchdog CAMERA.  On Monday, the Electronic Intifada, an anti-Israel website, posted an excerpt of a previously un-aired Al Jazeera report saying Milstein funds Canary Mission as well.
