Gordis: “Even in recent days, well into the second week of this war, Israelis were proving exceedingly resilient”

What if there’s never going to be peace?

…The books and the highway exits and the soldiers and the calendar and the language and the love of the land – it’s all part of what it means to be home. These were two terrible weeks, and we have numerous challenges to face, more internally than externally. So we’ll get to work. But ask Israelis whether – as devastating as these weeks were – if it was all worth it, and you’ll hear: it’s the price we pay to be home. And it’s the price we’ll continue to pay if we have to, because this time, we’re home to stay. READ MORE

Hamas Founder’s Son Urges Israel To Assassinate Hamas Leaders After Ceasefire: ‘Teach Them A Lesson’
by Ryan Saavedra
May 22, 2021

Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of Hamas founder Hassan Yousef, is urging Israel to continue targeting and killing Hamas’ leaders despite the ceasefire that went into effect late this week. “Assassinating Hamas leadership will not destroy Hamas, but it will teach them a lesson and hold them accountable,” Mosab Yousef said in an interview with the New York Post’s Jon Levine. “Next time, before you get civilians on both sides involved in a bloodbath, you need to think 1,000 times. This is my personal suggestion.”…In the interview, Mosab Yousef said that his views toward Hamas changed when he was imprisoned inside Israel and he witnessed jailed Hamas operatives torturing and killing people that they thought were working with the Israelis. As a weak and sclerotic Democratic leadership cowers before the anti-Israel zealotry of the Squad and its acolytes in the House of Representatives, American Jews are getting a glimpse of what the future may hold: a return to a not-so-distant past in which Jews stood alone to face either slaughter or survival. There are differences between now and then, of course. The Jews now have a state and an army, facts that provide the fig leaf for the new anti-Semitism now exhibited by left-wing Democrats, academics, and Jewish radicals. The old hatred has found new life in characterizing Jews as oppressors and the genocidal Hamas as victim. READ MORE

BREITBART Joel Pollak:Biden Fails to Condemn Antisemitic Attacks by Pro-Palestinian Activists Nationwide Jewish groups wrote to President Joe Biden on Friday as he failed to speak out against a wave of antisemitic violence across the nation, as pro-Palestinian activists targeted a synagogue, attacked pro-Israel protesters, and assaulted innocent bystanders…He said nothing about the ongoing antisemitic attacks in the United States, reflecting the silence of other Democratic leaders.

THE HILL Sanders push to block arms sale to Israel doomed in Senate An effort by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to block a $735 million arms sale to Israel appears doomed in the Senate. Progressives are mounting a late effort to try to stop the sale amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which entered a cease-fire phase on Thursday evening.

NEW YORK POST New York’s pro-Israel Dems bullied into silence by AOC, Jewish activists say Jewish activists accused powerful Democrats in the New York congressional delegation of cowering to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other leftist House members of the “Squad” by failing to forcefully stand up for Israel during its fight with Hamas in the Gaza strip. “Chuck Schumer? Who?

US President Joe Biden told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he expects Israel to move towards a ceasefire with Hamas on Wednesday, but Netanyahu said Operation Guardian of the Walls will continue until Israeli citizens are secure. Following a phone call between the leaders, the White House said that Biden “expected a significant de-escalation today on the path to a ceasefire.”…“With every day that passes, we strike more abilities of the terrorist organizations,” Netanyahu said. “We are thwarting more senior commanders, toppling more terrorist towers, striking more arms caches.” READ MORE

TIMES OF ISRAEL IDF officer: Hamas is looking for a ‘major success’ before the end of fighting The Israel Defense Forces believes that Hamas is “trying to have a major success,” such as a cross-border attack or other major assault, which it can hold up as a victory over Israel as the current round of fighting appears to be drawing to a close, a senior officer in the military’s Southern Command told reporters on Wednesday. The senior officer said he believed the military’s intelligence capabilities would prevent the terror group from conducting a large invasion into Israel, but acknowledged that a smaller operation was possible.

Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral Tuesday afternoon of a resident of Lod who died Monday, six days after being critically wounded when Arab rioters hurled rocks at him during unrest in the central Israeli city. Yigal Yehoshua, 56, was hit in the head with a brick when his car was pelted with rocks while on his way home last week as violent protests swept Lod. He was laid to rest in a cemetery in his family’s community of Moshav Hadid. Pro-Palestinians assault Jewish diners in Los Angeles
by Faygie Holt
May 19, 2021

The incident at the restaurant began on Tuesday night, after several cars with passengers waving Palestinian flags, and yelling “Israel kills children and women every day” and “Free Palestine,” drove past outdoor diners. In response, at least one of the diners yelled an explicative back to the activists, who threw something at the patrons. A number of diners ran into the restaurant while some of the Palestinian supporters reportedly jumped out of their cars, asked if anyone was Jewish and began pummeling those who responded in the affirmative…Local community leaders are also looking into what L.A. City Councilman Paul Koretz described as an attempt by “two drivers to run over a Jewish man who had to flee for his life.” READ MORE

CREATIVE COMMUNITY FOR PEACE Entertainment Leaders Call on Celebrities and Influencers to Stop Spreading Misinformation about Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Today, more than 125 leaders from the entertainment industry signed a joint statement released by the non-profit entertainment industry organization Creative Community For Peace, which calls on fellow entertainers and executives to use their platforms to combat misleading and one-sided accounts of the conflict in Israel and the Palestinian Territories….While we may have differing opinions on the conflict, it is never okay for Hamas to publicly call for the killing of civilians, use civilians as human shields, and rain down missiles indiscriminately on civilian populations with no care about who is killed—Arab or Jew.

ARUTZ SHEVA Sarah Silverman tweets that diaspora Jews “are not Israel,” curses at Israeli government Often times controversial comedian Sarah Silverman is coming under fire from Jews on social media for a Wednesday post in which she distanced all diaspora Jews from Israel and referred to the Israeli government with a swear word. “Jews in the diaspora need allies. WE ARE NOT ISRAEL. And we sure as f*** aren’t the Israeli government,” Silverman tweeted. Her tweet was in response to a tweet by Jewish journalist Eve Barlow noting the seeming lack of concern by the general public and media after the Tuesday evening mob attack on a group of Jews at Sushi Fumi restaurant in Los Angeles.

“Neutral application of property law becomes an international incident because a landlord is a Jew”

WALL STREET JOURNAL
Almost Nothing You’ve Heard About Evictions in Jerusalem Is True
by Avi Bell and Eugene Kontorovich
May 14, 2021 3:10 pm ET

Hamas never needs a special occasion to bombard Israel with rockets. Yet the progressive narrative connects the terrorist group’s current onslaught to eviction proceedings in Israeli courts concerning a few properties in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren claim these are stark human-rights violations by the Israeli government, and illegal under international law. Even the State Department expressed “serious concern.” The truth about Sheikh Jarrah is the opposite. It is an ordinary property dispute between private parties. The Jewish claimants’ ownership of the few plots of land has been confirmed repeatedly in court, following laws that apply equally regardless of ethnicity. Israeli courts have gone out of their way to avoid evicting the Palestinian residents who haven’t paid rent for half a century. READ MORE

WASHINGTON FREE BEACON YouTube Removes Video of Legal Scholar Defending Israeli Airstrikes An Israeli legal scholar’s argument about the legality of Israeli airstrikes was temporarily removed from YouTube on Monday for violating unspecified “content guidelines.” Eugene Kontorovich, a professor at George Mason University, appeared on RT to explain why Israel’s counterstrikes in Gaza are protected by international law. YouTube removed a video of his appearance because it violated the company’s terms of service. It later reversed the decision and restored the video without an explanation for why the initial action was taken.

If the Left Got Its Wish for Israel
by Bret Stephens
May 17, 2021

Imagine an alternative universe in which an enlightened Israeli government did almost everything progressive America demanded of it. An immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza. An end to Israeli controls over the movement of goods into the territory. A halt to settlement construction in the West Bank. Renunciation of Israel’s sovereign claims in East Jerusalem. Fast-track negotiations for Palestinian statehood, with the goal of restoring the June 4, 1967, lines as an internationally recognized border. Oslo would be placing phone calls to Jerusalem and Ramallah in October, to bestow the Nobel Peace Prize on the Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Arab states such as Saudi Arabia would establish formal diplomatic relations with Israel. READ MORE

WALL STREET JOURNAL Editorial Board: Biden, the Democrats and Israel Since Hamas began its rocket offensive last week, the Biden Administration has wisely refused to dictate the Israeli response. But the U.S. narrative war took a notable turn this week as Congressional Democrats demanded a cease-fire. We hope the President bucks his instinct to follow his party and leads it instead.

Britain slides into an antisemitic sewer
by Melanie Phillips
May 18, 2021

On Sunday, London’s Jews were subjected to four hours of drive-by intimidation directed at the entire community. A convoy of cars flying the Palestinian flag drove through one Jewish area of north London after another, with occupants screaming through a megaphone: “F*** the Jews, rape their daughters” and “Go back to Poland”. According to the Campaign against Antisemitism, the convoy then reached Downing Street to join a demonstration against Israel which featured numerous antisemitic signs including several equating Israel to Nazis. Some demonstrators wore Hamas-style headbands, and one was filmed yelling that Jews should “Go back to all the sh***y countries you came from”. READ MORE
