Philly NAACP president shares anti-Semitic meme with misattributed neo-Nazi quote
by Max Marin and Nina Feldman
July 24, 2020

Philadelphia NAACP president Rodney Muhammad shared a meme that depicted an anti-Semitic cartoon next to photos of Black celebrities who recently came under fire for their own allegedly anti-Semitic comments. Shared Thursday on Muhammad’s public Facebook page, the meme referenced the backlash against Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson, actor/rapper Ice Cube and comedian/TV host Nick Cannon, who have all attracted attention recently for advancing theories that blame Jewish people for the plight of Black Americans. Cannon and Jackson have since apologized for their recent posts, while Ice Cube doubled down. READ MORE

British University Lecturer Fired for Saying ‘Jewish People Are the Cleverest in the World
July 22, 2020

A British university professor has been fired for, in part, saying that “Jewish people are the cleverest in the world.” Stephen Lamonby, 73, a lecturer at Solent University in Southampton, made the remarks in question during a meeting with another academic, the Daily Mail reported. The other academic, Dr. Janet Bonar, said she had a degree in physics, and Lamonby asserted Jews had “a particular gift” in that field. Bonar objected to this, to which Lamonby replied, “I believe that Jewish people are the cleverest in the world. They are much maligned because of it.” READ MORE

For present-day speech police, “expression is not a right…but instead something to be permitted only insofar as it serves their higher purpose”

THE AMERICAN INTEREST
Free Speech Under Siege
by Michael Mandelbaum
July 27, 2020

…The assault on free speech is surprising, too, because it is taking place within two institutions founded on that very liberty, the press and the academy. Indeed, the two could hardly exist without it. Yet now it is there that it is under the most virulent attack. Third, while restrictions on speech are all too common around the world, in most countries it is the government that imposes them. In the United States, by contrast, the campaign against freedom of speech comes not from above but from below, from the aggressive tactics of majorities—or militant, intimidating minorities—within these institutions. Can someone criticize George Soros without being a Jew-hater?

John Kass Defies Chicago Tribune Cancel Culture: ‘I Will Not Apologize for Writing About Soros’
by Joel B. Pollak
July 29, 2020

Columnist John Kass has defied “cancel culture” at the Chicago Tribune after members of the journalists’ union attacked him for criticizing left-wing billionaire George Soros and his backing of “progressive” prosecutors across the country. Last week, Kass wrote about “an overwhelming sense of lawlessness” in Democrat-run cities, and noted: “[T]hese Democratic cities are also where left-wing billionaire George Soros has spent millions of dollars to help elect liberal social justice warriors as prosecutors. He remakes the justice system in urban America, flying under the radar.” READ MORE

Given her track record, Melton-Meaux’s once-longshot bid to upset Ilhan Omar in Aug 11 primary is becoming more realistic

Omar’s challenger Antone Melton-Meaux: Progressive and pro-Israel not mutually exclusive
by Jackson Richman
July 23, 2020

Since taking office in 2019, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has become one of the most outspoken critics of Israel in the U.S. Congress. She has become part of a growing cadre of young progressives within the Democratic Party whom critics fear will erode the long-heralded bipartisan support for Israel. Last month, this concern further grew when pro-Israel Democratic stalwart Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), who headed the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee, lost in a primary to Jamaal Bowman, another up-and-coming progressive. Yet for Antone Melton-Meaux, who is one of four candidates challenging Omar in an Aug. 11 primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, it seems possible to be progressive, pro-Israel, and most importantly, reject anti-Semitism. Palestinians alter rendering of destroyed building, calling it a “COVID-19 testing center” to implicate Israel in the latest libel

PALESTINIAN MEDIA WATCH
The birth and spread of a new anti-Israel libel: The claim that Israel destroyed a COVID-19 testing center in Hebron is false!
by Maurice Hirsch, Adv.
July 23, 2020

Whether you attribute the quote to Mark Twain, Winston Churchill or Jonathan Swift, the fact is that “A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on.” This age old adage took on new life when a lie invented by Palestinian sources spread like wild fire around the globe. In recent days, Israel destroyed a structure erected without a building permit. The structure, according to the original story of its owner, “was built to establish an exhibition hall for cars.” Manipulating sensitivity to the global pandemic, Palestinian sources, and their eager supporters, spread the libel that Israel had deliberately destroyed a COVID-19 testing center on the outskirts of Hebron, a hotspot for COVID-19 cases. “Over the last several days Hezbollah supporters have put up hundreds of social media posts vowing revenge”

JERUSALEM POST
How might Hezbollah retaliate against Israel?
by Seth J. Frantzman
July 23, 2020

Hezbollah has been prodded to respond to the death of one of its fighters in Syria in what it says was an Israeli airstrike this week. The terrorist group – which has thousands of fighters, more than 150,000 missiles and controls part of the government of Lebanon – says that Ali Kamel Mohsen was killed on July 20. Other members of the group may also have been harmed. Over the last several days, Hezbollah supporters have put up hundreds of social media posts vowing revenge. This kinds of rhetoric of “revenge” is similar to Iran’s claims that it will avenge the death of IRGC commander Qasem Soleimani, who the US killed in early January. READ MORE

The digital venture, called Diarna, takes you back to painstakingly revived synagogues and destinations once lost to history

SMITHSONIAN MAG
Inside the Incredible Effort to Recreate Historic Jewish Sites Destroyed Years Ago
by Dara Horn
June 2020

On a narrow street in Damascus, one of the oldest cities in the world, I pull open a heavy iron door in a cinderblock wall and enter an ancient synagogue. Behind the door, just past a tiled courtyard shaded by a large tree, I am stunned by what I see. I’m standing inside a jewel box. The small room is illuminated by dozens of elaborate beaded chandeliers; its walls are covered with thick red velvet draperies, its stone floor with richly patterned carpets. In front of me is a large flat stone topped with a golden menorah: Here, an inscription informs me, the Hebrew prophet Elijah anointed his successor Elisha, as described in the biblical Book of Kings. “The international community evidently has no problem with Arab racism and discrimination against the Palestinians”

GATESTONE
Palestinians: Victims of Arab Racism
by Khaled Abu Toameh
July 24, 2020

…In another sign of anti-Palestinian racism, a Lebanese newspaper published in April a cartoon that likened Palestinians to the coronavirus, sparking outrage among many Palestinians and even some Lebanese. The newspaper has refused to apologize or remove the cartoon. Lebanon’s anti-Palestinian sentiments show that it has no intention of helping the Palestinians who are living there. On the contrary, the statements of Bassil and other Lebanese politicians demonstrate that Lebanon is eager to rid itself of its Palestinian residents, the sooner the better. Like most Arab countries, Lebanon cares nothing about the suffering of the Palestinians. Other than lip service, it is not prepared to make the slightest effort to assist them. READ MORE
