Germany’s president confessed in a major speech on Wednesday that he was unconvinced his country had grasped the lessons of the Holocaust. Speaking at a session of the Bundestag, Germany’s federal parliament, to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp, Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned that “the evil spirits of the past are now appearing in new guise.”…Acknowledging [Israeli President] Rivlin’s presence in the audience, Steinmeier remarked, “I wish I could say today with conviction, especially in front of our guest from Israel: We Germans have understood.” READ MORE

And, “all of that pales in comparison to what my ancestors went through.” His maternal great-grandfather, who was from Poland, was put on a train to a concentration camp during the Holocaust.

WASHINGTON POST Holocaust study: Two-thirds of millennials don’t know what Auschwitz is Two-thirds of American millennials surveyed in a recent poll cannot identify what Auschwitz is, according to a study released on Holocaust Remembrance Day that found that knowledge of the genocide that killed 6 million Jews during World War II is not robust among American adults. Twenty-two percent of millennials in the poll said they haven’t heard of the Holocaust or are not sure whether they’ve heard of it — twice the percentage of U.S. adults as a whole who said the same.

YouTube Deletes 2,600 Kahane Videos
by Staff
January 10, 2020

Michael Miller spent five years collecting, editing, and uploading video footage of, or relating to, Rabbi Meir Kahane (1932-1990), founder of the Jewish Defense League and the Kach Party. Two weeks ago, on Erev Chanukah, Miller discovered that every single one of his 2,600 videos was gone. His account had been suspended. “I so far have appealed three times on three separate occasions,” Miller told The Jewish Press, “and the YouTube Team responded the same way all three times: ‘Thank you for your account suspension appeal. We have decided to keep your account suspended based on our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.’” READ MORE

The End of Obama’s Middle East

…The full ramifications of killing Soleimani won’t be known for a while. But its effects on Democrats, noninterventionists, and longtime national-security opponents of Trump were clear and immediate. These people were despondent. Not only did they oppose the Soleimani strike, they saw it as a prelude to a full-scale war. But it wasn’t Soleimani’s demise that caused them to panic. It was the inevitable collapse of the nuclear deal with Iran. READ MORE

Victor Davis Hanson: “Israel’s foreign policy could be called Jacksonian. Israel allies with friends, neutrals, and former enemies whenever they share particular strategic goals”

The Israel-U.S. Model Has Been a Resounding Success
by Victor Davis Hanson
January 23, 2020

Whether by accident or by deliberate osmosis, Israel and the U.S. have adopted similar solutions to their existential problems. Before 2002, during the various Palestinian intifadas, Israel suffered hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries from suicide bombers freely crossing from the West Bank and Gaza into Israel. In response, Israel planned a vast border barrier. The international community was outraged. The Israeli left called the idea nothing short of “apartheid.” However, after the completion of the 440-mile border barrier — part concrete well, part wire fencing — suicide bombings and terrorist incursions into Israel declined to almost nil. Reservations about the Trump Mideast peace plan
by Daniel Pipes
January 29, 2020

Nevertheless, I am not delighted with the plan, and for two main reasons. First, who needs it? Israel does best when it acts independently on its interests, not following the U.S. lead. All Israeli leaders since 1948 have wisely resisted plans imposed from the outside, implicitly asking, “Who assigned you to solve our problems?” But this time, the country’s top two politicians dashed to Washington to endorse just such a plan. I predict that these same leaders or their successors will rue ceding such authority to Americans. READ MORE

ISRAEL HAYOM Caroline Glick: Trump’s heroic truth and Israel’s historic opportunity For America to recognize the legitimacy of Israel’s control and Israel’s sovereign rights to these areas, America’s leaders would need to recognize the simple fact that Israel is not a refuge for a persecuted, pitiable people, but the homeland of the eternal nation of Israel. And all US presidents until Trump preferred to deny this truth. As a matter of US policy, they transferred the Jewish nation’s historical rights to the Palestinians who have no national history. But then, three years ago, Trump entered the White House.

“The arrival of dozens of world leaders to Jerusalem to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day and commit to fighting anti-Semitism represents recognition of Zionism’s fundamental truth: The Land of Israel is the one and only, eternal homeland of the Jewish people”

ISRAEL HAYOM (by agreement with JNS)
A great – but fragile – triumph of Zionism
by Caroline B. Glick
January 24, 2020

…The arrival of dozens of world leaders in Jerusalem to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day and commit themselves to fight anti-Semitism represents a spectacular reversal. By coming to Jerusalem the visiting dignitaries embraced the truth at the heart of Zionism: Israel was not founded because of Auschwitz. It was founded because the Jews came home to live in their homeland as a free nation, finally. Had the State of Israel existed in 1939, Auschwitz would never have been built…READ MORE

TIMES OF ISRAEL Under Trump deal, Israel said to retain security control over Palestinian state Under the terms of the soon-to-be released Trump administration peace plan, Israel would retain overall security control of the entire West Bank even if a Palestinian state is established in parts of it, Israeli TV reports said Friday night. Adding fresh ostensible details regarding the content of the plan, Channel 13 said it ultimately provides for a demilitarized Palestinian state in some 80 percent of the West Bank, under overall Israeli control. That state would not be empowered to maintain an army and sign military treaties, and Israel would control its borders…

THE JEWISH CHRONICLE The BBC has shamed itself with Orla Guerin’s Holocaust report Last night (and repeated today), BBC News broadcast her latest report from Jerusalem.
