Beresheet human error “led to the failure of the nearly $100 million lunar mission”

GEEK WIRE
Beresheet bummer: Investigation of Israeli lunar lander’s crash points to human factor
by Alan Boyle
April 17, 2019

A manually entered command apparently set off a chain reaction of events that led to last week’s crash of an Israeli-built lunar lander during its attempt to touch down on the moon, the mission’s managers said today. Preliminary results of an investigation into the crash indicate that the manual command was entered into the spacecraft’s computer, which caused the main engine to switch off and stay off during the Beresheet lander’s descent. The Jerusalem Post reported that problems started with a malfunction in an inertial measurement unit that kept track of the spacecraft’s orientation and motion. READ MORE

Moscow yeshiva set on fire during Passover Seder

April 19, 2019

An arson fire was set at the largest yeshiva in Russia as during a Passover Seder on Friday, Jewish officials said, according to The Associated Press. No one was reported injured in the fire at the Torat Chaim school in an eastern Moscow suburb. Olga Esaulova, a spokeswoman for Moscow’s chief rabbi, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying the fire was set in a storage area for kosher meat and that swastikas were drawn at the yeshiva’s entrance. There were about 60 students, rabbis and guests in the building at the time, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported. READ MORE

Gérard Araud, former ambassador to Israel, dismissive of Trump plan, calls West Bank “an apartheid state”

TIMES OF ISRAEL
French envoy to US: Trump plan ‘very close to what Israel wants, 99% doomed’
by Staff
April 20, 2019

France’s outgoing ambassador to the US, Gérard Araud, said US President Donald Trump is uniquely able to “push” Israel on his upcoming peace plan because he is extremely popular among Israelis and they “trust him.” In an interview with The Atlantic magazine published on Friday, Araud said the White House plan, engineered by Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, will be “very close to what the Israelis want,” and is 99 percent “doomed to fail.”Araud told the magazine that the White House was counting on three factors when it comes to the peace plan. The first is Trump’s popularity in Israel. READ MORE

UNC and Duke jointly sponsor Jew hatefest underwritten with federal funds

ROLL CALL
‘Anti-semitic rhetoric’ at Duke-UNC event prompts Rep. Holding to ask for federal probe
by Griffin Connolly
April 16, 2019

Rep. George Holding has asked the Department of Education to investigate whether a joint conference on Middle East studies by Duke University and the University of North Carolina that allegedly contained “anti-semitic rhetoric” should be the basis for pulling federal funding from a consortium of university foreign language and studies programs. In a letter to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, Holding criticized the “Conflict Over Gaza: People, Politics, and Possibilities” conference in March in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he says he saw “reports of severe anti-Israeli bias and anti-Semitic rhetoric at a taxpayer-funded conference.” READ MORE

“Jewish and Palestinian positions are entrenched, and no party offered ideas for changing that”

BLOOMBERG
Israel’s Election Didn’t Kill Hope for Peace. It Was Already Dead.
by Daniel Gordis
April 17, 2019

…What Israelis had to decide was whether they wanted the security and prosperity that Netanyahu has delivered at the cost of corruption indictments and Trump-like attacks on democratic institutions, or whether they preferred a Mr. Clean who would end the corruption, but whose ability to maintain the security and prosperity was entirely untested. They voted for the “devil they know.” Whatever Israel’s election means, Israelis did not vote against peace: No party was committing to it. Nor did the election reflect a weakening of Israeli democracy. READ MORE

Washington Post: “By omitting any mention of Jordan, reporter misleads readers into thinking Israel took the West Bank from the Palestinians”

AMERICAN THINKER
WaPo covers up information to make Israel look bad
by Michael Berenhaus
April 16, 2019

In “Netanyahu makes election vow to annex settlements in occupied West Bank” (4/7/19), the Post clearly and correctly states that the Golan Heights is “a plateau captured from Syria in 1967.” The Post then obfuscates the issue of who owned the West Bank before Israel captured that territory. It describes the West Bank as “lands Israel captured in 1967.” But whom were the lands captured from? The Post has no policy of concealing the former owners of captured territory, as shown by the passage on the Golan Heights. So why the disparity? The only possible reason is because the Post wants to hide the fact that Israel won the West Bank from Jordan [which occupied it illegally]. READ MORE

CAMERA New York Times Suggests “Terrorist” Label for Israel And considering the way those journalists shoehorned the Jewish state into the conversation — by suggesting that maybe Israeli intelligence should also be designated as a foreign terrorist group — it is, most troublingly, a story about a newspaper that has lost any measure of self-restraint when it comes to the small, Jewish country that so often dominates its attention.

“Mueller report reportedly reveals Michael Flynn testified that Trump team attempted to prevent UN resolution before taking office”

Mueller report: Trump attempted to thwart anti-Israel resolution
by Staff
April 18, 2019

The Mueller report, which examined Russian involvement in the US presidential election, showed that Donald Trump worked to counter anti-Israel bias at the United Nations even before he entered the White House. According to a report by Barak Ravid for Channel 13 News, Trump, his adviser Jared Kushner and former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, worked with several foreign governments to prevent the Security Council Resolution condemning the Jewish presence over the so-called Green Line in December 2016. Flynn said during his interrogation by the FBI that Trump and his team saw the thwarted decision as a significant issue. READ MORE

#BDSFail Israel gives Omar Shakir until May 1 to leave, noting “the appellant continues to call publicly for a boycott of Israel, or parts of it, while at the same time asking [Israel] to open its doors to him”

Jerusalem court upholds deportation of Human Rights Watch official
by News Agencies and Staff
April 17, 2019

The Jerusalem District Court on Tuesday upheld a deportation order against Human Rights Watch’s local director and gave him two weeks to leave the country. The court rejected an appeal by Omar Shakir to remain in the country. The New York-based watchdog has cast his case as a bid to suppress global criticism of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. Israel enacted a law in 2017 barring entry to any foreigner who “knowingly issues a public call for boycotting Israel.” Tuesday’s ruling was the first time the law was applied to someone already residing in the country.
