Traditional Jewish delis are about as rare in Chicago as giant slices of New York-style pizza

Hungry Hound:Jeff & Jude’s brings pick-up Jewish deli to Chicago’s Northwest Side
by Steve Dolinsky
October 2, 2020

…It’s only open a few hours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. But the few items on offer are certainly worth driving to pick up, especially if you miss the hearty breads and smoked meats, like I do, from a bygone era. Ursula Siker was a baker in L.A., so when she decided to open Jeff & Jude’s Jewish Deli – an homage to her folks, located on the cusp of Humboldt Park and Ukrainian Village – eggy, braided challahs and rustic country loaves would have to be a part of her menu. “We had a really large Jewish deli community where I come from, and so when I moved to Chicago, one of the first things I noticed was there was a lack of it in the city itself. Meet the top 15 Jewish political donors in this election cycle
by Ron Kampeas
September 24, 2020

George Soros may draw some of the most vociferous criticism, but he’s hardly the biggest political donor in this cash-heavy election cycle — Democrat or Republican. In fact, Soros is 24th on the largest givers in this cycle, and Jewish donors on both the right and left populate the list above him. That’s according to Open Secrets, which provides the top 100 individuals or married couples donating to the 2020 campaign. Among the top 25 on the list, 15 are Jewish or of Jewish origin. They include Tom Steyer, No. 1 on the list, and Donald Sussman, who have joined Soros in the litany of Democratic donors criticized by Republicans. READ MORE

“USC, your silence on antisemitism is deafening”

JEWISH JOURNAL
Why Is It so Hard for There to Be Zero Tolerance for Jew-Hatred on Campus?
by Micha Danzig
October 1, 2020

On March 7, 2015, members of the University of Oklahoma (OU) chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) were filmed on a bus performing a racist song that used the “N word” and enthusiastically referencing Jim Crow. The video of the incident was reported by The Oklahoma Daily on March 8. That same day, the national office for SAE closed the OU Chapter house, and OU officials gave SAE members until the end of March 10 to move out…All of this — sadly — stands in sharp contrast to how USC has responded to Jew-hatred on its campus. Amy Coney Barrett, Jewish liberals and the US Constitution
by Ruthie Blum
September 29, 2020

…Her personal life and politics are not the main thorns in the side of the left, however. No, the real problem is one that her detractors are doing everything in their power to obfuscate: that she believes in the separation of powers—restricting the purview of the Supreme Court to interpreting the law rather than forging it. During her speech at the White House on Saturday—with her husband and seven children in attendance—she was clear on this matter. “A judge must apply the law as written,” she said. “Judges are not policymakers, and they must be resolute in setting aside any policy views they might hold.” READ MORE

NATIONAL REVIEW Biden Staffer Suggests ‘Intolerant’ Views of Orthodox Catholics, Jews, Muslims Should Disqualify Them from Supreme Court A staffer on Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign on Monday suggested that Orthodox Catholics, Jews and Muslims should not be allowed to serve on the Supreme Court because of their “intolerant” beliefs.

COALITION FOR RELIGIOUS VALUES Rabbinic Group Deplores Attacks on Coney Barrett’s Faith and Family The Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV), representing over 1500 traditional, Orthodox rabbis in matters of public policy, today condemned criticism of Amy Coney Barrett, nominee to the position of associate justice on the US Supreme Court, based upon her religious views, membership in religious associations, or her family. The rabbis deplored these attacks upon the nominee as “based in bigotry and bias.”

New Documentary Examines The Death Of Michael Brown And Race In America
by Jordan Davidson
September 17, 2020

Shelby Steele, a conservative author and Robert J. and Marion E. Oster Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, wrote and narrated a new documentary, “What Killed Michael Brown?”, exploring race and violence in America. Directed by Eli Steele and set to premiere on streaming platforms on October 16, “What Killed Michael Brown?” is meant to examine race relations in the United States and the reactions to the deaths of young black men such as Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri…Steele believes it is the culture of black victimization and the rise of “white guilt” that plays a role in the increasing amount of attention and outrage at these events. Rotten apple: New Yorkers are fleeing to the suburbs
by Philip Delves Broughton
September 28, 2020

Demand for housing in [New York’s] suburbs has exploded. Real-estate agents are reporting bidding wars and cash offers on even the most humdrum properties, provided they have space for a home office and access to a reasonable school system. As home sales in Manhattan fall by half, they are doubling in the ’burbs. All those families who once said they could never leave the gritty life of New York City now want nothing more than a two-car garage and a basketball hoop in the driveway. READ MORE

Ministers deliberate next step after experts warn lockdown having minimal effect
by Ariel Kahana and Maytal Yasur Beit-Or
September 30, 2020

The special ministerial committee on the coronavirus crisis met on Wednesday in order to deliberate on the next phase in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, almost two weeks after Israel entered an almost-total lockdown for the second time in six months. According to a report presented to the ministers, the lockdown has yet to produce the desired results. “The ineffectiveness of the lockdown could be explained by the community spread taking place within households, but it is clear that an extension of the lockdown is essential,” the report said. The strictest part of the lockdown came into effect on Friday, just before Yom Kippur, and is officially set to last until the end of Sukkot in early October. READ MORE

UAE minister: Iran’s aggression made Arab world look at Israel ‘with fresh eyes’
by Edith M. Lederer
September 26, 2020

The United Arab Emirates didn’t need peace with Israel to counter Iran, a top UAE official said Friday, but he said Iran’s aggressive policies over three decades alarmed many Arab countries and made them look at their relationship with Israel “with fresh eyes.” Anwar Gargash, the UAE’s minister of state for foreign affairs, acknowledged at a virtual briefing on the sidelines of the equally virtual UN General Assembly’s annual meeting of world leaders that this may not have been Iran’s intention…He called Turkey’s opposition to the agreement “pure hypocrisy,” accusing Ankara of “trying to take advantage of the Palestinian plight for narrow regional considerations.” READ MORE

The left wants no part of liberal Israel
by Jonathan C. Tobin
September 29, 2020

In the world of politics, celebrity and name recognition is priceless, so in that sense, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is among the richest members of Congress. In two years, the freshman went from being an unknown to being one of the most consequential members of the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s true that as a newcomer, her influence on Capitol Hill with respect to advancing or blocking legislation is minimal. But in an era when Beltway gridlock has made the passage of landmark bills rare, AOC (as she is commonly known) has a different kind of influence that in many respects is far more consequential. That is why pro-Israel Democrats who hoped to make common cause with her were dealt a devastating blow this past week. READ MORE

ABE YEHUDA What American Jews Can Learn from AOC I said before that AOC taught a lesson that American Jews should learn, and it’s this: The progressive Left is not on your side, even if you are a died-in-the-wool two-stater, even if you dislike our Prime Minister, or even if you hate “settlements.” These people do not want to end the conflict; they would not be satisfied if Netanyahu quit, and a two-state division along the Green Line wouldn’t be enough for them. They want to see the PLO/Hamas win and the Jews lose.

“While asserting he’s never heard of Proud Boys, US president again says group should ‘just stand by,’ adding ‘let law enforcement do the work’; also denounces white supremacists”

Trump calls on far-right group to ‘stand down’ after debate blowback
by Jacob Magid
September 30, 2020

US President Donald Trump denounced white supremacists on Wednesday after skirting a request to do so during the previous night’s presidential debate, which sparked uproar from Democrats, Jewish groups and others across the political spectrum. “I’ve always denounced any form…Any form of any of that, you have to denounce,” Trump told reporters after being asked whether he’d condemn white supremacists before he left the White House for a campaign rally in Minneapolis…Trump was also asked Wednesday whether he was concerned about right-wing militias taking to the streets. He responded affirmatively, adding that “any form of crime” concerns him. READ MORE

JNS Asking the wrong questions about extremist violence The misleading claim that Trump refused to condemn white supremacists helps obscure the truth about divisive racial issues rather than clarify them…He did it again. When presented at the first presidential debate of 2020 with another opportunity to make a straightforward condemnation of white supremacists, he refused. Or at least that’s what many headlines screamed the next morning after the train wreck of a debate that was held in Cleveland.
