Rival bids have been submitted for Britain’s two major Jewish publications — the Jewish Chronicle and the Jewish News — which announced last week that they were going into liquidation as the coronavirus hit them financially. The Kessler Foundation, a charitable trust that has owned the Jewish Chronicle since 1984, submitted an offer to liquidators earlier this week to acquire the assets of both publications and run them as a single publication…However, on Thursday, a rival bid was filed for the papers by a consortium of political strategists, bankers and broadcasters who vowed to invest millions of pounds over the next five years, the Financial Times reported. Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Chris Coons (D-DE) are launching a bipartisan effort to ween the U.S off of medical reliance on China and replace it, at least partially, with Israel. More specifically, the two senators have launched the initiative to mitigate the coronavirus pandemic in America. Both members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee are also seeking $12 million in order to “enhance partnerships between companies in the United States and Israel to develop innovative medical projects aimed at detecting, treating, and curing COVID-19.” READ MORE

A World War II veteran and his wife of nearly eight decades who had tested positive for COVID-19 died together on the same day. David and Muriel Cohen died within hours of each other at a Longmeadow nursing home on April 10. Muriel, 97, had tested positive for the virus and David, 102, had been sick but his test results came back negative. The couple decided to remain together even as the Jewish Nursing Home tried to transfer residents who were infected to a separate unit. READ MORE

Poland’s ruling party took a stand on Wednesday against a far-right push to stop the restitution of property owned by Jews and others before the Holocaust. Far-right activists had gathered enough signatures to present a draft resolution to the Sejm, the lower house of Polish parliament, that would prohibit the redistribution of “heirless property”— property that belonged to private individuals, many of them Jews, who were killed in the Holocaust and whose heirs, if they exist, never filed for restitution….Maciej Konieczny, a lawmaker for Left Together, called the draft anti-Semitic, adding it was “a scare campaign about Jews who are supposedly going to rob Poland.” READ MORE

An African-American radio host’s public blaming of Jews for Baltimore’s coronavirus outbreak led to an accusation of anti-Semitism, particularly since data shows that the city’s COVID-19 hotspots include neighborhoods popular with both Jews and black residents. “There are a lot of Jewish people moving down here from New York City,” the host, George Mitchell, said on his WOLB 1010 AM show on Monday. “Now where was the hotbed of the virus? Israel’s return to normalcy post coronavirus (Covid-19) lockdown is set to start with its most productive sectors, first among them the country’s tech sector, according to a new report. The report was submitted by the Israeli Ministry of Finance Saturday to officials at the Ministry of Health and the National Security Council and was viewed by Calcalist. The final report will contain the time table for the return to activity of the various sectors, to be determined by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In the report, the finance ministry recommended gradually restoring industries with the lowest health risk potential and the most substantial contribution to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
