Congressional Measure to Recognize Israeli Sovereignty Over Golan Heights Killed
by Adam Kredo
May 24, 2018

A congressional resolution to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the contested Golan Heights region in Syria met a quick demise this week after House GOP leadership quietly put the kibosh on the measure following what sources allege was opposition from top Republican leaders and some in Trump administration…While White House officials familiar with the matter deny playing any role in opposing the measure, it was nixed earlier this week by House leadership, which refused to allow the historic measure to come up for a vote. A Jewish prayer gathering for Gaza victims makes British Jews lose their cool
by Cnaan Lipshiz
May 26, 2018

Martin Hizer was driving his taxi through London when he learned that a group of Jews were publicly gathering to recite the mourning prayer for Palestinians killed in Gaza. “Frankly, I was fuming,” Hizer, who is Jewish, said in an interview on YouTube for a pro-Israel channel. The video shows him confronting the 50 Jewish protesters in Parliament Square on May 16 as they said kaddish for the 61 Palestinians killed that week in clashes with Israeli troops. READ MORE

JEWISH NEWS SYNDICATE Mort Klein and Liz Berney: Appalled by ADL’s mourning Hamas deaths as ‘horrific tragedy It’s painfully shocking that Anti-Defamation League head Jonathan Greenblatt recently wrote on ADL’s website: “It is a horrific tragedy that so many people have been killed and wounded at the Gaza border.” Thus, we must ask: How is the death of mostly Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists a “horrific tragedy?”

“A massive daycare fraud in America’s most welcoming state raises questions about the limits of assimilation”

CITY JOURNAL
Mogadishu, Minnesota
by Scott W. Johnson
May 21, 2018

When it was noted that the carry-on bags of multiple airline passengers traveling from Minneapolis to Somalia contained millions of dollars in cash, on a regular basis, law enforcement was naturally curious to know where the money came from and where it was going. It soon emerged that millions of taxpayer dollars, and possibly much more, had been stolen through a massive scam of Minnesota’s social-services sector, specifically through fraudulent daycare claims. To make matters worse, the money appears to have wound up in areas of Somalia controlled by al-Shabab, the Islamic jihadist group responsible for numerous terrorist outrages. JEWISH CURRENT ISSUES
Philip Roth and Memorial Day
by Rick Richman
May 25, 2018

…Making Memorial Day part of a long weekend has had the unfortunate effect of in many cases relegating it to a vacation rather than focusing on it as a day of memory. As Meir Soloveichik notes in the June issue of Commentary, it is “observed by many (though not all) Americans as escapes from work, and too few ponder the link between the sacrifice of American dead and the freedom that we, the living, enjoy.” Roth’s novel [The Plot Against Americashowed how (in Sinclair Lewis’s phrase) it might have “happened here.” But the book was fiction, and the historical fact is it didn’t happen here. Eventually more than 400,000 Americans died in World War II to make sure it didn’t, and to secure our extraordinary freedoms. The list of American casualties in various other wars is also stunning.  READ MORE

Author Michael Chabon has “a remarkable ability to present a one-dimensional reality in which the Jews are evil oppressors and the Palestinians are powerless victims”

How My Graduation Was Ambushed
by Morin Zaray
May 22, 2018

…With great pride, I marched into the Stephen S. Wise Temple sanctuary and sat in the front row. Our commencement speaker, author Michael Chabon, took the stage. Very quickly, it was clear that Chabon, as eloquent as he was, viewed Israel in black-and-white terms. He condemned Israel’s security wall, proclaiming “Security is an invention of humanity’s jailors … putting up the separation barriers and propagandizing hatred and fear of people on the other side of the wall. Security for some means imprisonment for all.” READ MORE

From StopAntiSemitism.org: We urge Hebrew Union College to apologize to the students who were offended by Chabon’s address and call on the institution to make clear that Chabon’s anti-Israel views do not reflect the views of the school. We also encourage you to email directly to the President and Chancellor Emeritus Rabbi David Ellenson at dellenson@huc.edu and Dean Joshua David Holo at  jholo@huc.edu to express your concerns. Click here to sign the petition protesting Michael Chabon’s anti-Israel speech.

JERUSALEM POST
IAF commander: Israel first to use F-35 jet in combat
by Anna Ahronheim
May 22, 2018

Israel has struck targets in the Middle East with the F-35 Adir jet twice, making the Jewish state the first country to use the stealth fighter in a combat role in the region, Israel Air Force Commander Maj.-Gen. Amikam Norkin announced on Tuesday…Norkin made the comments while showing a picture of an Israeli F-35 Adir flying over the Lebanese capital of Beirut during the daytime…Another senior IAF officer at the conference said that the decision to announce the F-35 Adir strikes was partly taken following an intelligence assessment. ISRAEL HAYOM A message to the radical axis The F-35 is the most ambitious weapons project in history, but after all the well-documented malfunctions and delays Lockheed needs success stories like it needs oxygen – and there’s nothing quite like Israeli airstrikes, with the bonus of photographic evidence of an F-35 flying invisible to radar over Beirut, to bolster its image and consumer confidence.

Bernard Lewis (1916-2018): “He’s been Bibi’s confidant and Edward Said’s nemesis (of whom he said, “It’s hard to know where ignorance ends and deceit begins”), but mostly, he’s been the voice of clarity in a region of distorted facts and fabrications”

Bernard Lewis: 100 Years in the Making
by Yonoson Rosenblum
May 22, 2018

…In 1976, he published an article in Commentary, “The Return of Islam,” that broke with the prevailing orthodoxy that the Middle East was rapidly headed toward a future of secular revolutionary movements. The standard American college textbook on the Middle East at that time bore the title The Passing of Traditional Society: Modernizing the Middle East. That year, Anwar Sadat was firmly in control in Egypt, and the Muslim Brotherhood was under his thumb; the Shah of Iran was still ensconced on his throne; and Osama bin Laden had just graduated an elite high school where he wore a blazer and tie. TIMES OF ISRAEL Netanyahu eulogizes Bernard Lewis as ‘great scholar, robust defender of Israel’ Lewis warned presciently about the possibility of Muslim parties winning control of Egypt, urged the world’s democracies not to misguidedly push for elections throughout the region as an ostensible panacea, and instead recommended that the West encourage the gradual development of local, self-governing institutions.

SPECTATOR USA Domenic Green: Bernard Lewis was right about ‘the return of Islam Lewis was the English-speaking world’s most eminent modern scholar of the Middle East…He said that the Arabs were the authors of their own misery, and that the ‘return of Islam’ meant that unhappy Islamists were going to share their misery with the rest of the world.

Making friends while racing with ‘the other’ in Jerusalem
by Abigail Klein Leichman
May 17, 2018

Philip, like many of the teens involved in Arab and Jewish Jerusalem running group Runners Without Borders, doesn’t know enough Arabic to converse with his counterparts from Arab neighborhoods. But as a recent Russian immigrant, he barely speaks Hebrew either.  While running through Jerusalem’s Liberty Bell and Mesila parks for training once a week, Philip nevertheless has made friends. “He found common ground with both sides, communicating with signals and a few words as they run together,” says Israel Haas, cofounder of RWB, which encourages Jewish and Arab residents of the city to meet, interact and cooperate through athletics.
