“Social changes lead to a confluence of worldviews between the Orthodox and the evangelical”

WALL STREET JOURNAL
The New Jewish-Christian Amity
by Abigail Shrier
September 7, 2018

…In 2000 most Jews—Orthodox included—still faithfully voted Democrat, preferring Gore-Lieberman to Bush-Cheney. But by Mr. Bush’s second term, the Orthodox communities had shifted rightward, partly because of the second intifada, which made them more grateful for Christian Zionism. They’ve never really looked back. According to the AJC Survey of American Jewish Opinion 2017, Orthodox Jews preferred Donald Trump to Hillary Clinton by a margin of 2 to 1. Unlike secular and non-Orthodox Jews, who still tend to view religious Christians’ affection with suspicion, Orthodox Jews are less concerned by the theological reasons for the support. “US officially announces closure of #PLO mission in Washington”

TIMES OF ISRAEL
Bolton warns ICC not to go after Israel, confirms closure of PLO’s DC office
by Staff and Agencies
September 10, 2018

The United States on Monday warned the International Criminal Court against prosecution of US or Israeli officials for alleged war crimes in the Middle East. White House National Security Adviser John Bolton called the Hague-based rights body “unaccountable” and “outright dangerous” to the United States, Israel and other allies, and said any probe of US service members would be “an utterly unfounded, unjustifiable investigation.” In the same speech, Bolton confirmed that the US is closing the PLO’s office in Washington, DC. And, when you do try to help us, we reserve the right to spit in your face.

“The Obama administration alumni who now insist that Putin is America’s number-one enemy did everything they could to appease him – in exchange for nothing — for years”

BREITBART
The Immoral Foreign Policy of the ‘Resistance‘
by Caroline Glick
September 7, 2018

One of the constant themes of the “Resistance” — most recently restated in the New York Times’ anonymous op-ed Wednesday — is that President Donald Trump is “amoral” because he is interested in cultivating good relations with dictators. In the words of the anonymous op-ed author: “In public and in private, President Trump shows a preference for autocrats and dictators, such as President Vladimir Putin of Russia and North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, and displays little genuine appreciation for the ties that bind us to allied, like-minded nations.” Notably, this is the same line used by the Israeli left and by Israel’s many critics in the West against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s foreign policy. Democrats accuse (Sex and the City’s Miranda) Cynthia Nixon of being antisemitic

NEW YORK POST
NY State Dems imply Cynthia Nixon ‘anti-Semitic,’ prompting outrage, denials
by Laura Italiano
September 9, 2018

Eleventh-hour campaign mailings from the New York State Democratic Committee imply Cynthia Nixon is anti-Semitic — prompting an online maelstrom of outrage and denials Saturday night, with Gov. Cuomo and the state party calling the mailer a “mistake.” “With anti-Semitism and bigotry on the rise, we can’t take a chance with inexperienced Cynthia Nixon,” reads the mailer, which says it was paid for by the New York State Democratic Committee. It goes on to accuse Nixon of being against the funding of yeshivas — a topic she’s actually dodged — and falsely accuses her of being “silent on the rise of anti-Semitism” and of supporting the BDS movement. “As Jews, Orthodox or otherwise, we see our Jewish identity entirely congruent with our identity as Americans”

REAL CLEAR POLITICS
Judaism Is Not Synonymous With Liberal Progressivism
by Yechezkel Moskowitz and Curtis Ellis
September 7, 2018

In contrast, others in the Jewish community, many but not all of them Orthodox, understand nationhood and exceptionalism to be indispensable central tenets of Judaism. Indeed, they are key Judeo-Christian concepts fundamental to Western civilization. The biblical covenant of a Chosen People is the fountainhead of American exceptionalism, the belief that America can be a “shining city on a hill” and “a light unto the nations.” When Donald Trump says, “I am president of the United States, not president of the world,” he is defending the idea of nationhood and rejecting post-national globalism. Jewish voters identify with his words on many levels. READ MORE

“Sarcopenia, a decline in skeletal muscle in older people, contributes to loss of independence”

NEW YORK TIMES
Preventing Muscle Loss as We Age
by Jane E. Brody
September 3, 2018

The fact that you may regularly run, walk, play tennis or ride a bike is not adequate to prevent an incremental loss of muscle mass and strength even in the muscles you’re using as well as those not adequately stressed by your usual activity. Strengthening all your skeletal muscles, not just the neglected ones, just may keep you from landing in the emergency room or nursing home after a fall.  Dr. Morley, among others, points out that adding and maintaining muscle mass also requires adequate nutrients, especially protein, the main constituent of healthy muscle tissue. “Despite the misrepresentations of some anti-Israel Democrats, policies protecting Jerusalem and Israeli-controlled territories in no way prejudice efforts to negotiate a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians”

Amended Israel Anti-Boycott Act is harmful, not helpful
by Alan Clemmons and Joseph Sabag
September 7, 2018

In essence, the amended Israel Anti-Boycott Act has not merely been amended. Rather, it eliminates the fundamental operating provisions of the original bill by only providing impermanent, easily revocable protections for the Israeli-controlled territories the UNHRC is specifically seeking to target. The blame for this unraveling belongs to AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, whose staff designed the bill and ultimately watered it down in response to hostile Democratic demands as it proceeded through the legislative process. “Rabin, who detested the PLO chieftain, had deep misgivings about the Oslo deal, which had been engineered by Foreign Minister Shimon Peres”

The White House handshake that made everything worse
by Jeff Jacoby
September 5, 2018

Twenty-five years ago next week, on Sept. 13, 1993, the Israeli-Palestinian “peace process” was formally launched with the signing of the Oslo Accords at a White House ceremony hosted by President Bill Clinton. The moment was captured in an epochal photograph of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO chairman Yasser Arafat shaking hands before a beaming Clinton. I was there that day, one of many guests on the South Lawn of the White House invited to witness the encounter in person. The small detail was Rabin’s unwillingness to grasp Arafat’s hand. READ MORE

“What I learned leading High Holiday services at Rikers Island”

TABLET MAG
Rosh Hashanah Behind Bars
by Yitzhak Bronstein
September 5, 2018

I awoke to the now familiar smell of a hard green pillow, its fire-resistant plastic pressed against my face. Nearby my friend lay on his cot several inches off the floor saying modeh ani, the prayer of gratitude recited daily upon waking. Outside our room a correctional officer—definitely don’t refer to him as a prison guard—stared at his desk, slowly collecting overtime until the end of his 16-hour weekend shift. My friend and I were here to lead Rosh Hashanah services for the Jewish residents of Rikers Island, the overcrowded New York City jail complex notorious for its violence. READ MORE

by Mike Miller
September 3, 2018

Roseanne Barr is heading all the way to the Holy Land to avoid The Conners. During her latest appearance on the Rabbi Shmuley Boteach Podcast, the comic said she’ll be in Israel when the upcoming Roseanne spin-off airs without her this fall and will not be watching. “I have an opportunity to go to Israel for a few months and study with my favorite teachers over there, and that’s where I’m going to go and probably move somewhere there and study with my favorite teachers. I have saved a few pennies and I’m so lucky I can go,” she said, adding, “It’s my great joy and privilege to be a Jewish woman.” READ MORE
