Israeli Forces Kill Palestinian Man in West Bank Clash

JERUSALEM — Israeli forces fatally shot a Palestinian man during a demonstration in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, a day after a pair of knife attacks by Palestinians left an Israeli soldier and a female settler dead.

Everything you need to know about Jodi Rudohren and New York Times coverage of the Arab-Israeli conflict can be gleaned from the outrageous headline and lede paragraph pasted above.

A) Israel is cast as the aggressive actor (“Israeli Forces Kill Palestinian”), B) Israeli murder victims are essentially cast as deserving of their fate (he was a soldier, she a settler) and C) No connection between Israel’s actions and terrorist event is referenced so Israel is made to appear brutalizing.

And news stories are supposed to inform and clarify ?

For clarity here, the victims are 20-year old IDF soldier Almog Shiloni, of Modiin and 26-year old Dahlia Lemkus, of Tekoa, Gush Etzion. From the NYT reporting you won’t learn Dahlias name until paragraph 15, Almog’s name, paragraph 17.

The Palestinian shooting victim, Mohammed Jawabreh, is named in the second paragraph.

No efforts to humanize Israeli victims here. That would be a bridge too far.
