‘We’re Not Alone’: Canadian Community Shows Up 60,000 Strong for ‘Walk With Israel’ March

An estimated 60,000 people marched through the streets of Toronto on Sunday for a “Walk with Israel” to show support for both the Jewish state and Canada’s Jewish community amid surging levels of antisemitic violence, discrimination, and extreme anti-Israel activity across the country. Organized by the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) Federation of Greater Toronto, the annual demonstration was the 57th since being established in 1969. Sunday saw a record crowd, drawing 4,000 more activists than last year. A multitude of people comprised those in attendance, including an array of non-Jewish allies from the Black, Christian, Hindu, an Asian communities. The immigration policy pursued by France since the late 20th century is perhaps the clearest example for the rest of the world of what not to do. Beginning in the 1960s, France attracted immigrants to fill labor shortages in its industries, yet there seemed to be little concern that many of them clustered in deprived neighborhoods and gradually built a cultural reality parallel to that of the nation hosting them. The failure of that model is visible to anyone who opens a European newspaper today, but it is worth understanding why.
