Europe’s Borderless Dream Becomes a Nightmare

…In the late 20th century, Europe dreamed of a borderless continent. The Schengen Agreement made movement between European countries seamless. You didn’t even have to show a passport if you drove—for instance—from France into Italy. But a borderless Europe does not work if Europe has no external borders either. As my repeated trips to southern Europe have proved to me, most of the migrants who arrive in Greece, Italy, and Spain will not stay in these countries. They are merely a doorway into Europe. Most of the migrants want to head north for the larger welfare payments. Germany and other northern European countries will therefore be the ones who will end up paying the most for the decisions made by Pedro Sánchez. The situation is, of course, unsustainable.
