…The Birth of the Bandwagon Gay. I first started using this expression around the summer of 2024, after a friend of mine experienced an ugly confrontation on Fire Island. Fire Island has historically been one of the great sanctuaries of gay male culture. It also has a substantial Jewish community, including many gay Jewish men with deep connections to Israel. My friend, who is a gay Orthodox Jew, had been attending a house party when the topic of Israel came up, and in their gaggle of homos someone said something along the lines of “We don’t support genocide here!” He gently told them he had family members serving in the IDF, that he knew people who had been murdered on October 7, and that people he knew had been taken hostage.
